   @notjustbikes Today after work I am taking the kids in the bakfiets to Hilversum station (5 minute ride), getting a train to Amsterdam Centraal (20 minutes), taking the tram to Vondelpark (17 minutes) and meeting an old friend for a chat and a beer. I will not be terrified for my kids' lives at any point during the ride. My rent is less than 2 bdr apartment in the SF bay area. My house has 4 bedrooms (one too many) and an office.

   I feel guilty when I say "it feels cheap here" but... it does

     @Fuzzbizz yeah it's a totally different situation in Amsterdam.

     You could live in a newer (and much cheaper) city like Almere and easily commute into Amsterdam by train. It's not as pretty as old cities, but you'd still be able to live somewhere with good urbanism and lots of local amenities.

     That option is not available to you in Canada. It's "drive 'til you qualify", and you will absolutely be living somewhere car dependent and spending multiple hours per day driving.

     @notjustbikes It boggles my mind that nice rowhouses can be had for only half a million within commuting distance of Amsterdam.

     Every time a Dutch person comments "but what you never mention, when comparing Amsterdam to Canada, is that housing is expensive here!" I'm just going to send them this image.
