@bloodaxe It does seem like the majority of people who use Owncast keep their instances private. So while I believe the number of people who use Owncast for a variety of live streaming needs is increasing, the number of people doing "Twitch-style" streaming are fewer.
@DopeGhoti@captaincalliope Each microblogging platform has their own features of what, and how, they render content inline. Mastodon, however, will render an Owncast stream in the timeline if you share the URL. For example: https://lyre.live/
@atomicpoet I'm feeling like I must have offended you in some way in the past. If that's the case I apologize. I don't know why you have such feelings to go on the offensive.
If you're asking in good faith, it's exactly as expensive as you want it to be for your use case. I don't know what your requirements are or your hosting options are, so I can't tell you what it would cost. It's like asking the price to run Nginx. It depends what you're doing with it.
@atomicpoet Sending out a message to 16k people saying running Owncast is expensive isn't helpful or accurate. I'm not sure why you'd want to spread FUD about the project. It's a piece of infrastructure that lets a lot of people do some really cool things. If it's not for you, that's fine, but I thought we were all on the same team.
@ill_logic Building a new Android application would be a huge undertaking. Owncast is a very, very small project. Hopefully all that functionality are things you can already do from the web without a dedicated app.
@captaincalliope Sandstorm is new to me! Would you be at all interested in seeing if Owncast might be a fit for the Sandstorm app marketplace and what it would take to enable that?
Today is the three year anniversary of Owncast's first commit. I hoped a new release would be ready by "First Commit Day", but a little more time is needed. Thank you for your patience and support, here's to another three years!
@meljoann@shadowsminder If it's helpful at all, I'm really proud how LGBTQ+ streamers have taken to Owncast. I can't pretend to know the thoughts behind each streamer, but I love how much diversity there is on that front.
Owncast is a free and open source live video and chat server for your events. Stream your entertainment, education, tv station, performances, games, communities, conferences, or whatever you have to share with an audience without big tech.
