@rmasoni@FediFollows It's simply a resources problem. I don't own a Apple Silicon mac, and the number of people running Owncast in production on macs are very low. I'm not mocking them, I'm simply saying I can't support them and focusing on the most useful for the most people is all I can do.
@AudraTran@blake I wouldn't call it a replacement for Twitch. It's a live streaming server you can use for whatever your needs are. Some people use it for Twitch-style streams.
I hear comments like yours a lot. The problem is I don't know how to convert words like "polish", "modern", "nice", or "proper" into _actionable_ things. What is nice? What is proper? What is modern? Maybe you can help!
With new features on the horizon Owncast is looking for a UX designer!
We’re still young in our design goals and would love the experience of a dedicated designer to inform both the process and the pixels around building a cohesive product that people love to use.
@draqlo Using it as an equivalent to Twitch is probably the most difficult use case, because you're 100% responsible for building your own audience. People are used to getting viewers funneled to them, and with Owncast you don't have that. So Owncast works well when you have a streaming need where you have a built-in audience.
@Mrfunkedude@nategullion The later. Fediverse integration functionality is optional with Owncast. I'd like to find out why people don't enable it and see how I can get more servers to do so.
Do you use Owncast but don't enable Fediverse functionality? I'd love to hear from you to learn your use case. I'd love to see more Owncast instances on the Fediverse, and I want to learn why people don't. Maybe asking people on the Fediverse is preaching to the choir, but it's all I've got!
Just created a #Kbin group at https://fedia.io/m/owncast. Maybe now is the time to see if having a place to support group-based conversations is helpful for the project. Hello @owncast@fedia.io!
@jasonnab@rhsjjack That's correct, each stream is a self-contained server that is independently operated. As for moderation, if you're talking about on the Fediverse, you wouldn't follow a stream that you don't approve of and you could of course block them on your microblogging service of choice, just like any other Fediverse identity. If you're talking about Owncast chat moderation there's functionality to support that.
When you operate your own live stream your sponsor's logo can be as big as you want and you can advertise anything you like. Your server, your content, your rules.
@DiWoWo Sorry, I misread. I thought you originally asked for an app on the Google Play store. I'm afraid I'm not of much help with specifics of what apps are on what stores and what they contain. I hope you find something, though!
@WizardOfDocs Admittedly, running your own live streaming server isn't for everyone. And it's certainly not a 1:1 replacement for big tech services. But Owncast does allow you to run your own live stream, whatever that entails, with your own rules, allowing flexibility to do your own thing. Here's some existing streamers sharing some stories if you're interested to hear some use cases. https://videos.owncast.online/v/GbUWuPQzFvN88SGuihfrS9
Owncast is a free and open source live video and chat server for your events. Stream your entertainment, education, tv station, performances, games, communities, conferences, or whatever you have to share with an audience without big tech.
