My parents have reached Acceptance

I kind of think it helped that I waited to tell them I was getting my name changed until it was "yeah, I can't get the travel auth for our trip to the UK bc I'm prioritizing getting my passport updated before the new year, so I can put the right name on the travel auth"

but they've said they want to support me, and to be at my and @storm 's wedding when we finally get a civil ceremony together so I can be Canadian

"I made all the bookings under my old name" is also a problem for when I have the new passport

What I mean is semantics focuses too much on the literal informational content of language, while pragmatics gets into all the reasons people say things the ways they do, which I think aligns better with what y'all are advocating for.)

@inthehands @datarama @futurebird @snacktraces yeah, formal semantics is my least favorite part of linguistics. That's why my master's thesis is in pragmatics: it lets you study speaker intent *without* all those assumptions.

I still feel bad using other people's code, even though I hate programming, because everybody's going to know I don't understand what I'm doing.

When the truth is that being able to synthesize other people's code to do what you want is how you prove you do know what you're doing.
