What really gets me about the "95% of NFTs are now worthless" reveal is, each and every one of those piece of shit ape drawings required a nontrivial energy consumption to generate initial, theoretical value. Most of this energy ultimately came from fossil fuel and coal.

Collectively, they basically took a huge bite out of global measures to minimise our environmental impact — to generate worthlessness.

@martijn @dansup "the most extreme cases" are pretty much what fediblock was created for. When entire instances let all moderation slide and allow their users to harass others, or post bigoted and hateful messages, and it doesn't make sense to play whack-a-mole with individual users.

Turns out, there are a plenty of extreme cases like that, and you're probably benefiting from them not being in your feed 🤷

It suggests putting the author name stated in the publication first because that's what others need to retrieve the source, and giving the author's "real" name (which I would compare to their lived name) in brackets.

I know this is the opposite of where you landed, and I understand the reasoning for emphasising an author's lived name over their given name. In some respects, lived names could also be considered pseudonymous in that they are assumed — although not for the same reasons.

This is not a simple matter, but until there is a clear citation style guide on the subject I would use the published name first with the lived name in brackets for clarification, only to simplify the retrieval of cited sources.

Obviously, the weak point in that approach is the lack of discovery, which means that an instance federated by whitelist only could go from safe space to echo chamber real quick.

I have zero interest in a stagnated timeline of other near-50, white, cishet dudes. Which is also why I'm hoping to see more users from the smaller instances now that the deafening chatter from the big servers has gone away.

I've already curated my feeds rather ruthlessly according to my own interests and sensibilities, just to sluice the stream a bit. Add to those the many domains that my instance admin has blocked, that's a lot of blacklist to keep adding to!

Instead, I would be building a FOAF, interest based network. It would be a splinternet for sure, and one with limited discovery of new instances, but that appeals to my near-analog, small web sensibilities, wizened as they are by middle age 😛

Because @rra claimed that .social is unblockable due to its size, I'm going to try and mute that instance for the remainder of July. In fact, I'll do him one better and mute .art as well, just to see how my feed changes.

IIRC, "mute domain" actually means "block domain", so I'll be unfollowing a handful of people and also cutting off some followers... Nothing personal, consider this your "get out of jail free" card, no pressure to re-follow when my experiment is over.

I went and muted misskey.io as well because tbh the number of manga loli upskirt drawings I can be bothered with at any given day is <n. So that was quarter of a million otaku gone with one fell swoop.

The feed is already much calmer!

Rather than working with large instance block lists, I would like to build a whitelist instead, and only federate with a steadily growing number of server. I call it the "grandpa method" because it's so clearly not about being instantly in touch with everyone, anywhere.

I think we could go further than blocking project92 and also putting a ban on blink82 and sum41.

@bram @feditips Yeah, my frame of reference is when book publishers cash in on publishing authors from the PD. They're just trademarking their own edition (basically the book layout), and avoid having to pay royalties.

@feditips @bram Yeah, seems the question is how much you estimate that you add to the advice you give (contextualising, specifying, presentation...).

Since the information itself is essentially public already, that's the part that you can claim — or abandon — "rights" to with a license.

@feditips CC-BY if you want credit. Add -NC if you want to make sure nobody tries to profit from them. That's the basic ones.

Anybody using #Wordpress as a #activitypub instance found a way to access it through a #fediverse app? If so, which?

I could use the WP app itself, but it's sort of unwieldy for microblogging, particularly since it became a "site builder" rather than just blogging app...

ATM the site is only using the WP-activitypub plugin, so I also take suggestions on how to enable writing from other apps (as apparently xml-rpc is considered unsafe).
