I'm just gonna say it, Jon Stewart is on my shit list.

Unlike before he left TDS I'll admit I only watched him a few times. But he was so angry and lashing out at Democrats that I just couldn't.

I've said MANY times that I've got more complaints than most people with the Biden Administration.

But what I saw from Stewart was basically just regurgitation of Chris LaCivita talking points mixed with his own self righteousness.

I just don't need that misguided privilege in my life right now.

@wendinoakland @GuyDudeman this. But these men are all white supremacists using misinformation to push white supremacist propaganda in the hopes of triggering a white supremacist reaction out of people.

And millions of white supremacists didn't need the propaganda.

Millions of others bought it for one reason or another.

It's absolutely the misinformation but the misinformation is a tool and a tool with particular characteristics that were very racist and transphobic.

@mattsheffield the hypocrisy crowd on the left is exhausting.

I know I've got my moments but I try to limit my own hypocrisy.

You're exactly right about what is wrong with Melania.

And I've got no love for mocking Trump for mobility issues.

They may be cause for concern, sure, but scorn? Hell no.

Pointing out his hypocrisy. Ok. But again his words and actions against other people are enough to condemn him and his lot a thousand fold.

@WarnerCrocker yeah, I'm convinced this MFer isn't as ideologically motivated as he is simply on a Hitler revenge tour.

If I had to rank the most evil hearted people in the world, and I'd admit I don't have adequate info to do so, I'd put him right at the top.

There's a lot of competition for number 2, but this sick fuck is their king.

Folks, don't buy the Europe is a) one homogenous mass and b) fascist/authoritarian free bull shit.

If you know me you know I've been freaked out about the US going fascist for my entire two years or whatever on Mastodon.

Why? Because country after country in Europe fell to similar tactics. Now, recently there's been a couple of counter examples, it is true, but generally? No, Europe is trending to the Right just as much as the US.

Folks. It's time to get serious about security.

    Nothing digital is foolproof.

But I'm going to require my family and friends to use #Signal to text me and maybe even call me.

Probably going to require something like #ProtonMail for emails.

And even then I'm going to be careful.

Remember, your phone and mic'd Internet connected devices are ALWAYS listening. Is it presently being used to see if you're breaking some law? Probably not. Can they be used that way next spring? Probably yes.

@Nichelle sure. Except. It is in fact white people. Flip the white vote and Harris wins by miles.

White supremacy did this. Period. This is white supremacy. Whether it's white supremacist oligarchs here or in Russia or white supremacists at MAGA rallies the problem is the white supremacy.

Now, that white supremacy has turned into fascism but it's still white supremacy.

It's our nation's original sin. It MUST be stopped or this will happen again.

@mekkaokereke there are multiple books from the Civil War and leading up to it that prove this point repeatedly.

I mean, it's been obvious for the whole of the country's history.

And two of the biggest racists of them all were the wives of Woodrow Wilson and Ronald Reagan.

When do you think we can breath again? I've been holding my breath more or less for eight years but even a little breath? Like the one in November 2020 and 2022?

But I've been given the Dems 20-40 hrs a week the last three or so weeks. I'm tired. I'm out of breath.

    I just don't think it'll be Nov 5 this year. But January 3? January 6? January 20?

    Sooner?

I mean, if the fascists win... I'm not even gonna finish that thought.

Ummm hooking your phone into the sound system and playing music you don't have the rights to while inexplicably wobbling on the stage for 40 minutes is a concert?

@wdlindsy as much as I agree with the author here, I feel like they don't understand what fascism is.

As you know, fascism is a replacement of politics with violence, a rejection of the Enlightenment in favor of a birth determined hierarchy all serving the biggest grievance based ideology imaginable.

While Interwar fascisms absolutely had a goal of some common good for the people it assigned as worthy, this was secondary to the need for violence and grievance.

    What they're describing.

@wdlindsy interesting. We might disagree here. The author in my opinion doesn't give the concept more power rather they dismiss concept while literally using definitionally fascist characteristics to describe what they call not fascism.

Also, while the press and lay population may use a more flexible variety of the word, people like Stephen Miller are using the textbook definition (if such a thing exists, strictly speaking), though I'd argue it's an evolution best described as neo fascism.

@wdlindsy from the standpoint of persuading the broader public there may be some merit to a more flexible definition of the term.

However, from the standpoint of using observations of the current neo fascist movement and making reasonable assertions of their true intentions given *they are sticking to the historic model* it's important.

For example, they know damn well before the Holocaust came mass deportations and property seizure and before that came talk the masses dismissed as hyperbole.

@wdlindsy I appreciate that. But even Orwell said in 1944 the term fascism has no meaning other than things we don't like. But he warned that was a mistake though he wasn't sure what to do about it. "All one can do for the moment is use the word with a certain amount of circumspection and not, as is usually done, degrade it to the level of a swear word."

I know you're not doing what Orwell warned us not to do. I'm suggesting the author of the piece you quoted is.

    @wdlindsy totally agree.

I do think the term is watered down the way Orwell described in 1944. There was a generation of scholarship that worked hard to remedy that but it's efforts and work are watered down today.

I think the media needs to do a better job, even in the headlines, of connecting the dots.

Trump is openly channeling Hitler. Repeatedly. The press needs to identify this AND why it's so dangerous *in headlines*.

@StillIRise1963 @WarnerCrocker there's a book called the Big Ones about natural and unnatural disasters that makes the argument that humans evolved to put bad things in the past and essentially forget about them because otherwise we'd fail to reproduce, thrive and eventually exist.

It makes some sense to me. But like many things we evolved this may be one we need to learn to evolve past especially as increasingly our species is creating the disasters that befall us.
