European Institutions start to take action and stop posting on Twitter/X
EFSA, the European Food Safety Authority, based in Parma, stops posting in X as of today Jan 13th:
"We're taking a break from X"

EFSA has experimented with Mastodon in the past, and I hope they will come back to it soon.

@liztai Hi, it's 7:35 AM where I am reading this, and after doing it I am logging off ๐
Lo que yo os sugiero:
Meet the European fighters against mosquitos!
Those preparing for the arrival of the tiger mosquito in Central Europe
Those researching new techniques in #urban environments
Those developing traps
One running projects in two tropical islands that havenโt seen a mosquito in months.
Finally, meet the sterile male insect that gives name to this series. #SterileMale

1.2 M Europeans live on the streets. Hundreds of them freeze to death every year
A Czech couple started crafting "igloos" for them, simple capsules for one person, designed to accumulate the warmth of a human body
Pavla Kleฤkovรก, founder: "A company in Zlรญn offered to take over the production of igloos with no profit"
This winter, igloos produced in Zlรญn will provide shelter for homeless people in several European countries

Dear Mastodonians,
Could you please recommend European scientists that are researching the environmental impacts of datacenters and/or AI?
I've suggested in my workplace to assess the environmental footprint of our IT infrastructure, which is mostly cloud-based and uses gradually AI.
The Staff Committee might invite experts in the field to gather more information.
Thanks!
The elephant in the room in the migration away from #Substack is the payments gateway IMHO
Substack uses #Stripe. Move to WordPress? The payments platform is Stripe. The European platform Kessel.media? Stripe. I haven't seen *any* alternative, have you? Please share!
Stripe takes more or less a 5% cut per transaction. It's available in many countries but not all. It requires you have some sort of company or legal entity to receive the money. Not criticising it but, are there other options?
I need a place to scream.
The political party of which I've been a member for decades has just opened an account in Threads, as soon as it was possible. They have NOT opened a similar one in Mastodon, one year since the mass #TwitterMigration.
I'm outraged. How can it be that the values of this organisation are so far from mine at the moment.
The usual reason not to be in #Mastodon: "we have to stay in Twitter because it's where people are". Now they're in #Threads? WTF.
WHAT THE FUCK
At the conference I will argue that travelling by train in #Europe is "a project"
- Strong dependencies. Miss one train and the whole trip is in jeopardy
- Budget issues. Mind the route, the type of service.
- Plan for contingencies. Leave enough time between trips to allow for potential delays.
- Deal with different providers. I am buying tickets from 3 providers who don't talk with each other.
- All of this, crossing borders in a multicultural environment :)
Good morning, Mastodon!
It's my turn for a #CrossBorderRail and #noflying adventure. I'm going from Parma to Brussels to speak at a project management conference.
My route is Parma - Milan - Brig - Basel - Strasbourg - Brussels. 5 trains, 4 countries, plenty of possibilities that the trip takes an unexpected turn :)
First one is on time at 6:10. Let's do this!

European Sleeper has just announced the extension of the Brussels/Amsterdam/Berlin night route to Dresden and Prague, starting March 2024.
This, with (as far as I know) only ONE TRAIN.
YEAH!
@goatsarah @jon Hopefully we will see a connection to Porto, Vigo and Coruรฑa, serviced by Iryo.
But as far as I know, railroad works still have to start!
Are #trains too expensive? They need to be more affordable to compete with the plane.
BUT
Many trains, particularly #nighttrains are full. Reducing costs won't bring more passengers. First, we need more trains
Which price policy is needed? @jon: "It depends"
Milan-Rome. Large cities linked with good infra: more competition
Amsterdam-Brussels. Already at capacity: no use for new operators
Paris-Brussels. State-owned monopoly (Thalys) but prices set via market
