@evan I don't understand this adversarial stance, activity pub has a privilege ATM of a small network effects but it is by no means the only or even optimal way to set up a social network.

If you are serious about federation why not federate with other protocols? Centralizing at the protocol later is just as much a mistake as centralizing at the server level.

Why is everything framed in binary? We can do both at the same time and have been. Resources put towards going to space and landing on planets is nothing compared to how much is spent on exploiting and also dealing with the exploitation of earth.

Stripping away the romance of space seems like a deep mistake. Exploration is one of the great human endeavors? Solving problems pushes us forward

the answer to that is a bit nuanced, keet itself is currently closed with a "totally going to be opensource next year stance" by the devs.

otoh the underlying foundational software is open source and actively maintained by the same team :

@rysiek an easy one is that neural networks are a simplified model of neurons , otoh if you believe in substrate less intelligence and consciousness the argument gets more muddy?

@rysiek the surprising thing about neural networks and LLMs is one of complexity and emergence.. what we are debating right now is did the mountain actually move or is it just a philosophical illusion?

I still am a fan of neuro symbolic systems as a necessary part of the path for thinking machines but at the same time I think computation is simplified thought, otoh the whole debate gets very deep very fast..
