Which reminds me, the boyfriend I had when I was renovating my old house used to take my stud finder and scan his chest until it beeped and then announce himself a stud. I loved that guy.
@clacke Relatable. I still remember my phone number from childhood (45 years ago). My parents haven’t had that number for 25+ years. It would be a bummer if I called it now and someone other than my parents answered. I know it’s likely but better if I don’t slap myself in the face with reality.
Suki would like to point out that her sunny spot is criminally underresourced in the cushiness department whereas Pasha has two beds (stacked) and a sunny spot.
I helped co-facilitate a grief group yesterday for folks whose spouses/partners have died within the last year. It was a reminder for me of how a loss like that can redefine a person such that the only shorthand they have is with others who are going through it.
For those of you for whom today’s date is a reminder of a heart-shaped hole in your life—whether it is for a specific person or for a deep longing to be seen, loved, and nurtured—I’m thinking of you.
@skuwamoto@RoyGBiv I think I’m also going to be learning new things about what this platform can do now that we have critical mass. After all, see how fast #JohnMastodon traveled!
@skuwamoto@RoyGBiv Since you have been curious and kind to indulge me, here’s one more tidbit and it might surprise you: Even though you and I are interacting here, I am not on Mastodon! From Mastodon, you can follow and interact with people on any platform that implements the ActivityPub protocol, which includes Pixelfed, Friendica, Calckey, Misskey, Identica, Hubzilla, and Pleroma. (Mastodon has the greatest adoption. No need to rethink your choice of platform.) My instance (libranet.de) is a Friendica instance. Pixelfed is the Fediverse equivalent of Instagram. (And it’s awesome.) In the corporate-controlled world of social media, a lot of us had Facebook, Twitter, AND Instagram accounts. Here, you can choose one and follow people on others. Or you can have multiple accounts. (I also have a Pixelfed account but I haven’t given it any attention in a while.)
@skuwamoto@RoyGBiv Thanks! I might not succeed at making decent comparisons because I was barely on Twitter and only years ago. But my impression is that there was a lot of drive on Twitter to get one’s message/brand out and pass clever one-liners around. The content was intended for a wide audience and the interaction was fast-paced. This place has been more like a neighborhood bar. You’ve got regulars and people who drop in, and you can float between conversations. The topics tend to be more intimate/personal; and even when they are political, the exchange is slow enough that it feels like a roundtable conversation.
In a way, that intimacy is kinda built into the ActivityPub protocol (which is what the Mastodon platform implements). There’s no algorithmic advantage to “likes”, and messages don’t travel to everyone instantly. They only travel through direct engagement. That can take time as people slowly discover each other and join in conversation threads that were started days, weeks, or months ago. Plus message size is generous. So, there is no need to be pithy. I choose to comment much more than I reshare because it gives me the chance to empathize and connect with the person posting. And, if you haven’t noticed, I’m not terse. So, the ability to wax on suits me. 😀
Mind you, this all may change. It’s not that the old way is the best or right way. But it’s what those of us who have been around awhile found to work. The newcomers will certainly influence and change the culture. So, once new folks have had a chance to grieve the old site and get their bearings here, who knows what this will all be like in a few months?
@skuwamoto It’s the “reaching an audience” part that is antithetical. Maybe that will change with all of the Twitter refugees, but “audiences” are not really what we do here.
@skuwamoto I’ll give a more direct answer below. But let me offer how to think about discovering content and connections in general. There are many nodes (instances) on this decentralized platform. (For example, yours is mastodon.social, priryo’s is linernotes.club, and and mine is libranet.de.) It would overwhelm the system to ensure that all posts travel to all nodes. Instead, posts travel selectively, through the connections and interactions made between the users on different nodes. More specifically, first by the “follow” relationships of users and then secondarily by commenting on or resharing a post by another user from another node. Once it has arrived at a new node, a post is discoverable by all users on that node.
For example, I saw your post because I follow @priryo and priryo reshared your post. That means your post was first on linernotes.club and would have been pulled into the feed of any linernotes.club users who follow the hashtags on your post. When priryo reshared your post, it traveled to the nodes of all of priryo’s followers and ended up in both the feeds of priryo’s followers as well as the feeds of users in the followers’ nodes that follow the hashtags on your post. The lessons here are … - Hashtag your posts. (For example, let’s add #newhere to grab the attention of those who help newbies get oriented.) - Follow hashtags. - Follow people from other nodes. - Comment on their posts. Not only does it help posts travel but it contributes to a culture of mutuality and listening more than speaking. - Reshare others’ posts. Especially those who might not otherwise have a megaphone. Especially if the post has hashtags. Strike a balance here so that you aren’t resharing so often that people don’t get to know you and so that you aren’t overwhelming your followers feeds with content they cannot filter.
Now, to give you a hopefully more direct answer about finding #figma fans. Do any of these these look like the kind folks you are interested in following?
@clacke I could place your accent as Swedish (Krister Henriksson comes to mind) but I am less sure about the origin of the DC-10 video guy other than Nordic. I might have guessed Danish except that his vowels are more closed.
What is the shame about? I work every day with people from all over Europe, India, and the English-speaking world. Accents are the norm.
@Mrfunkedude Four others joined me at the pond for silent human meditation on this cloudy and nearly freezing day. The geese, however, decide to have a big family reunion and were having at least 3 different conversations at the same time. Also, I heard one red-winged blackbird that made a delightful whistle before their more audible, mechanical-sounding trill. Finishing up my brown rice and tofu scramble and a spiced chai. Pretty sure there will be dog walks and a nap in my near future.
@Mrfunkedude Mine are so brilliant that I happily give them away in hopes that someone will bring them to fruition. If that person is out there, please put a dog bed on wheels and add a light and heat detector so that it always follows the sunny spot on the floor.

alysonseeMy partner found a dog boarding place that specializes in hosting senior and special-need dogs. It’s out in the country where it’s quiet (rather than some industrial park near a big road), has lots of small yards covered in pea gravel (so the dogs can separated for playtime and the ground isn’t muddy), and accommodates complicated dietary needs, and the pups get one-on-one cuddle or play time with people every day. We got a tour yesterday and really liked it AND it is reasonably priced.
That’s one step closer to being able to go away on a much needed vacation together (which we haven’t done since 2019).
What can be done to fix this? I tried the only 2 themes available on the version running on @libranet , and neither of them show who liked or reshared a post anymore. We just get an aggregate number. It makes the experience of using Friendica feel a bit empty. Here’s what it looks like: ♲ libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-1…
@clacke With it gone, I am surprised to learn how much I relied on seeing the user list to feel connected. It feels kinda lonely now. I can’t tell users apart because they are only part of an aggregate number rather than a name than I can have a history with. If I am willing to give up Frio, has anyone found a theme that does work?
