As someone who has been doing "AI" professionally for 10 years now and really believes in its potential, I've been quite bummed about how much people on Fedi hate it.
But I've just set foot outside academia for the first time and heard a keynote talk about AI in an industry meeting and it was so fucking dumb that I left early, angrily. The most insane brain rot bullshit I ever came across.
Now I understand why people outside academia hate it so much.

What are good brands these days for bluetooth speakers? I don't want the speakers to have a lot of functionality or even amazing sound etc., just something that isn't entirely enshittified yet.
My current speakers are really annoying because it is literally (!) impossible to turn them off. They sometimes wake me up in the middle of the night with "Ready to connect!!".
You know, like apparently the company brother is for printers.

@tillshadeisgone ah that's really nice! That option should be made opt-out rather than opt-in IMO

@MichaelPorter
it's somehow notoriously hard to remember to put alt-text. That's why there's a bot for that!
Simply follow @PleaseCaption and every time you forget an alt-text, that bot will privately message you. In the beginning it was a bit annoying but by now the bot trained me well. -

A mastodon feature I'd like to have is to add a private note (only visible to myself) about why I blocked/muted someone.
With some profiles it is obvious but sometimes you really only see someone's true assholery shining through in a specific toot. -

This morning, out of nowhere, I decided enough is enough. Python existed for over 30 years, so the following issue just shouldn't exist anymore:
>>> 0.1 + 0.2 == 0.3
FalseSo I after people tried to convince me of julia for many years because it supposedly handles numbers much better, I finally tried it.
julia> 0.1 + 0.2 == 0.3
falseOkay then.

@annika my partner is still rocking an Ubuntu 18.04 laptop as her daily driver. Yes I've made her aware that it's been unsupported for a while and offered help upgrading.. to no avail.

What I don't understand: such a bootstrap must've been done at least once before in history, otherwise we wouldn't have any compiled programs, right? Why wasn't it possible to go the route of the previous bootstrap again? I'd appreciate a link to some further reading on this. 🙏

@jz I love soy beans and this is probably really tasty, but I will say that it does *not* look visually appealing ;)

"Lastpass says hackers accessed customer data in new breach"
Use a password manager they said. For your safety, they said. You know whose data was never breached? My mom's. Who keeps her passwords written down at home, like they told us not to.

@Utzer I absolutely agree!
But there was definitely a time when people who write their passwords down on paper were joked about.
