@annika I have an X1 from 2019 with Linux on it. It is working nicely, but the discrete GPU is kinda annoying to get right. If I switch it off entirely, nothing works anymore, so I leave it on, but then the laptop constantly burns a lot of power and I've had a battery life of max 2-3 hours since day 1.. I hope that the newer models work better in this regard. Or that you manage to configure it better than I have.

Public service announcement: I have changed my profile picture. I only do this very rarely and announce it every time. It can be confusing as hell when someone changes their profile picture, because some people (like me) mostly associate a picture with an account.

I chose to now show my face for the first time, such that I'm not just a faceless stranger to you.

@cwebber I checked it out recently as well, it does look nice. Development on this app seems to have significantly slowed down though, I wonder if it'll be maintained in the long run? The cool kids seem to be moving to restic.

@janneke I think working for cooperatives is one thing, but it's equally important to just buy stuff (goods and services) from cooperatives, and cooperatives should be buying services from each other. Put another way, everyone should boycott non-cooperatives.

As someone who has been doing "AI" professionally for 10 years now and really believes in its potential, I've been quite bummed about how much people on Fedi hate it.
But I've just set foot outside academia for the first time and heard a keynote talk about AI in an industry meeting and it was so fucking dumb that I left early, angrily. The most insane brain rot bullshit I ever came across.
Now I understand why people outside academia hate it so much.

What are good brands these days for bluetooth speakers? I don't want the speakers to have a lot of functionality or even amazing sound etc., just something that isn't entirely enshittified yet.

My current speakers are really annoying because it is literally (!) impossible to turn them off. They sometimes wake me up in the middle of the night with "Ready to connect!!".

You know, like apparently the company brother is for printers.

it's somehow notoriously hard to remember to put alt-text. That's why there's a bot for that!
Simply follow @PleaseCaption and every time you forget an alt-text, that bot will privately message you. In the beginning it was a bit annoying but by now the bot trained me well.

A mastodon feature I'd like to have is to add a private note (only visible to myself) about why I blocked/muted someone.
With some profiles it is obvious but sometimes you really only see someone's true assholery shining through in a specific toot.
