   @graydon there's definitely a lot of political/social refugees living here who can access quite a lot of social support! Americans don't qualify... yet.

   My point is that, as a disabled person who can support myself financially, countries with a universal public health system won't let me immigrate even though I would be a net positive in revenue. The Dutch private healthcare system is generally regarded as bad but because it is private, they let me immigrate, which is ironic

   I should really acknowledge that I'm extremely privileged to have a decent research computer grant that I needed to use, that was the whole reason I was able to afford this fancy-pants laptop. It continues to be great! I've gotten almost all the software I need installed on it, no major hiccups yet.

   My old laptop still has some life left in it, and will get used by undergrad research students, and I hope this Framework one lasts me well over a decade.

   What are good brands these days for bluetooth speakers? I don't want the speakers to have a lot of functionality or even amazing sound etc., just something that isn't entirely enshittified yet.

   My current speakers are really annoying because it is literally (!) impossible to turn them off. They sometimes wake me up in the middle of the night with "Ready to connect!!".

   You know, like apparently the company brother is for printers.

   You don't. You're fully logged in to google.

   I frankly don't find the sandbox google play services argument convincing, except for the sake of greater compatibility with a very narrow selection apps that don't work with MicroG yet.

   My knowledge of Android is admittedly quite rudimentary, but I find it alarming that when I install Google Maps with zero permissions, it already has my account info (which it's getting from google play)
