@liztai The US isn't the only country bordering the Gulf of Mexico, so it's a bit strange to change it. What if he wants to change the Atlantic to Fart's Ocean?

I actually wasn't aware of the dispute over McKinley until now.

@liztai Facebook still has critical mass. Various people I'd have a hard time staying in touch with otherwise, and several groups that are hard to follow without it. So I'm staying for now.

@liztai Ouch! Go easy on yourself.
We don't go back until 2 January.

@steffen @support Do you have any updates? We're now at 4 to 5 days delay with Mastodon, so can't really have conversations.

I've noticed Diaspora posts seem to show up straight away, but my Friendica posts have several days' delay reaching Diaspora.

@liztai I approve! I'm a big fan of the 'can I throw this stuff together in the pot and make something nutritious and edible?' school of cooking. Good way to use up veg before they go off, too.

Hi, for the past week or so, it seems to take 15-24 hours for Mastodon posts to reach my timeline. It's been slow before, but this seems especially bad. Is there a known problem here? Thanks.

@liztai Any recommendations for Kdramas or Cdramas on Netflix for a complete beginner?

I'm fine with drama, romance, adventure, fantasy. But not too much violence, it just reminds me of the real world.

@liztai Wow, I thought two languages on the screen was bad! I have seen films in French with Hebrew and English subtitles. So I listen to pick up as much of the French as I can, while reading... Except that Hebrew and English are written in opposite directions, so you can't read both! It's a split second decision which one to read each time the subtitles change. 😁

@liztai I lived in a haunted house for a couple of years. But the ghost, or whatever it was, wasn't evil. It actually helped me out once.

I remember a month or two after moving in, asking my housemates if they thought there was a presence in the house. I was afraid if sounding silly. But they said definitely yes. They'd even considered investigating if anyone had died there.

@liztai I've watching the first video link in your piece. While this guy has a useful insight about people not having a voice, otherwise I think he really misses the point. He's missing the hardship of poor people that has been exacerbated by the last Conservative governments (food banks serving millions now, as opposed to tens of thousands under the previous Labour government). He says you can't discuss immigration, but doesn't mention the toxic anti-immigrant messages coming from both politics and media for years, setting the discourse. I also think he's wrong about Nigel Farage and the far right; Farage and Reform got a lot of votes because of the shambles in the Conservative party - more than he would got under any other circumstances.

@liztai @jfslicer es Same here. Liberal didn't used to mean left at all in Europe, although now it's used to mean that sometimes. It's imported from the US.

To me left is tied to people power, socialism, democracy - something like the origin of the phrase from France. Much of the current progressive politics isn't 'left' by these standards.

@liztai I see your point. To be fair, I also understand people saying, 'actually, this isn't even about you', and 'you're only insulted when it's drag queens'. That's why I was trying to understand if there was something specific about this unintentional depiction which felt blasphemous, as the painting has been referenced often in pop culture.

@liztai I can understand how that would be upsetting. I guess I'm trying to get my head round it being blasphemous - as it's a reference to a reference to an important Christian event, and not even a direct comment on Jesus. If you don't want to discuss this further, that's fine, I don't want to step on a sore spot.

@liztai I agree with one of the links in your blog: an artist doesn't control what the audience sees in their art. So even if the intention was referencing a different painting, millions of people saw this as the Last Supper, simply because it's the most famous painting of that type.

Something else puzzles me: May I ask why you take referencing the painting of the Last Supper as blasphemous?

Samson challenges his wedding guests to answer the riddle

Out of the eater came something to eat,
and out of the strong came something sweet.

This is a reference to Samson's earlier adventures killing a lion, and later passing the same way and finding honeybees and honey in the corpse.

The wedding guests extort the answer from Delilah, Samson's wife. As Samson lost the wager, he has to give his 30 guests a good suit each. He acquires them by killing thirty men. Ain't the Old Testament grand?

@liztai Thanks for your piece! I don't watch Chinese dramas, and had no idea this anti-China thing was a thing.

Also thanks for the link! I grew up in Israel but have lived in the UK for over 20 years. The UK's wholesale adoption of American culture wars is something I have regular rants about.
