@georgetakei That's an eminently reasonable thing to ask!

@evan qualified no.
I know a question has to be simplified to be asked, but... governance is a whole lot more than the tools (registration selection) or organising entities (volunteer, dictators-for-life).
It's one part cultural. Read: how do conflicts arise, and how are they addressed?
It's also the hard question of financial sustainability: how do we make sure we have models that deliver, day after day, month after month, and year after year?
And, finally, about how to manage loss.

@evan I'm not sure the status quo of relying on volunteers is the best method: it can work, but there has to be supports and additional governance for ease of transition when things go sideways for communities and instances.
Not sure what the solution is, but I'm looking forward to learning about what solutions are being tried across the #fediverse.
Hence, qualified no.

Look at who has joined us here on the #Fediverse!
It's one of Canada's pre-eminent economists, Professor @trevortombe. As a person who was formerly involved in politics, I regularly relied on his reasoned research and revelatory insight.
Also, it was always good to see a public intellectual hold court and press for a fullness of dialogue in our shared democratic discourse.
So, my advice?
Follow him.
Like, yesterday.

@evan I was expecting another gut punch. It was comforting that they didn't add that extra kick to the shins. ?

This... might have some unintended consequences.
I get the cultural animosity, and the hostile nature of VC-backed products, and the issue of people-as-the-product discourse, and how some (many? all?) venture backed mischief has caused unrestrained grief to so many...
... but alternative modes of investment in technology is a pain and limited. ? I hope young coders and developers aren't taking the wrong lessons on the anti-VC nature of Mastodon.

@aurynn I'm going to sit down and write a list of alternatives to VCs and angel investors.

@aurynn yeah, I think it would be useful, too.
Like, we want new toys. We want the developers. And we want new communities. It's... the very awful, very difficult situation that's created by the domination of VCs in being seen as the only way to finance the things that make the internet awesome.
Anyways, I'm going to sit in my corner and contemplate. Thank you for kindly responding on my minor quibbling.

@aurynn ? there has to be *one*, or at least one, example of a VC-backed product that has made the Internet awesome or better.
I... just can't think of such a product. I will report back if I come across an example! ? But system-wide yeah, 100%. ?

@aurynn I...
Did find one. @evan wrote a smidgen about it, and my Googling and searching GitHub has offered alternatives to VCs (did you know @mozilla has VC group? It's venture capital, but do we alter the nature of tech finance with a foundation taking the lead?).
Anyways, I might make a git repository. And place the info there.

@ruud I've been enjoying YouTube music. It has all my remixes and various YouTube videos pre-converted to songs (I quite enjoy the musical creativity of some online fandoms).
... I'd almost recommend it, depending on your views on rather large corporate social media websites... ?

(3) One big benefit of #MastodonWorld was that folks could have a 'landing pad' to then move to another instance. It might be worth it to have that sorting element, of finding their next instance or server, be brought into some form of ongoing inter-server #fediverse relationship building.
(4) I see you've launched the pool-appreciators instance... I think a very strong argument can be made to also create spin-off instances that naturally flow from #MastodonWorld and support point 3.

@ruud ... and...
(5) Some of the other instances are launching other #fediverse instances, outside of Mastodon but with a continued relationship with the original instance. For example, @chad is working his way through a PeerTube project.
Maybe there's an opportunity to create some elements that can expose those on #MastodonWorld to other services that they hadn't consider yet? (PeerTube being just one example.)

@ruud Excellent to see!
(1) I still suggest creating that legal fund (from that conversation on that other thread of ours).
(2) I think we should spend a little bit of money on a Starbucks gift card or two for the moderators. Since they're up late at night, we should at least reward their volunteering with some coffee. (Consider it volunteer appreciation!)
