    I get many questions, so:

Mastodon does not have verified accounts!

When you see anyone with a blue/green checkmark behind their name, that's just an emoji. Anyone can set that in their Display Name.

To avoid confusion, we disabled the :verified: emoji on Mastodon.world a while back.

If you want, you can still pay $8 like you can on Twitter. Just go to the donations page https://opencollective.com/mastodonworld

Note: I've been told using emoji in your displayname isn't nice for people using screenreaders.

@ruud there is just a way to verify against the domain. If you put on your site special <rel me="mastoton profile url"> and your site is mentioned in your BIO custom section it will be marked as verified.

@ruud Why not also try to increase public knowledge of the green "verification" field on the profiles?

As a follow-up: It is possible to get your website / domain verified.

You need to add a link on your site containing <a rel="me" href="https://mastodon.world/@username">Mastodon</a> (You can change the last 'Mastodon' to any text you like)

Then your link will show in green, with a green checkmark, on your profile.

(See my profile for an example)

@ruud Thanks for this! As someone who’s not tech savvy, to be clear, the link includes everything from <a to /a>, yes?
And why would one want to change the second ‘Mastodon’?

@clayrivers Yes it's the complete link (replace 'username'). The last word Mastodon is what will show on your page. You could also put 'My profile on Mastodon' or whatever text you like.

@clayrivers PS the text can also be replaced by an image/icon, as you use on your website for the other social links at the bottom

@mortentoudahl Your name shows the : verified : behind your name, not the emoji.

      We might reconsider this disabling.

@ruud I think that's (semi) important to know. Don't take people with the verified checkmark seriously.

But what happens when someone using it interacts with an instance where it has been disabled? Does it still show?

I think that would add more confusion.

@ruud Hi, Ruud! I tried this on my profile and I don't get the green checkmark. Does this happen immediately, or does the change happen as a result of some batch process?

@ruud @mortentoudahl I was confused at first (seeing the emoji text, and not the emoji). I've grown to appreciate the soft-blocking of the verified emoji. Thank you for doing it, Ruud. ?
