@KeepTakingTheSoma @HebrideanHecate @Fullycaffeinated I’m just going to confirm this is a thing in the US too. A lot of special education funding goes towards kids whose parents want that extra bit not kids who need it. I haven’t filled for the 504 my daughter would qualify for because she doesn’t really need accommodations right now (she has ADHD and it’s genetic :blob_rave: ). We’ve also been teaching her division at home to try to keep her engaged and busy (she’s 8).
I don’t want to ask for services just because she could qualify. I had services and needed them in school and dropped them as soon as I no longer needed them (dyslexic and went to college without any aid). I know friends whose kids are dyslexic as well and they’re being taught fundamentally differently than I was. I try not to be judgemental about it, but the focus seems to be teaching them to rely on programs, apps, and other tech now. None of that was a thing for me, I was taught to find ways to help myself and I still use those skills daily.
