@hellomiakoda if you just run systemd-inhibit $YOURCOMMANDLINE, so something like `systemd-inhibit make`, that will run make(1) and prevent sleep as long as it's running

Kinda glad Solaris doesn't have things like that lol

@hellomiakoda controlling people is a goal, in most cases, because the entire human project is built in suffering. it is designed, and has been designed, for centuries, to perpetuate suffering for the sake of it, because power only exists in contrast to powerlessness, and because personhood, humanity, all those terms, are, as they ever have been, conditional.

@hellomiakoda honestly? desperately trying to reenforce ontological DRMs and the myth that to scream at the world is how entities should live. We have theories, mainly that it's something on the order of "living on earth can't get too good lest the whole heaven thing stop being a thing to hold over the heads of others"

@clarity we are somewhat glad that, due to being blind, we don't actually see a lot of the unusability. Windows 7 and Windows 11 are, for us, basically identical in usability

@kitten it's delightful. 400 down, 100 up, the only email we ever got from him was to let us know that he noticed high upload, we were like "yeah we're backing up our server" and he was like "oh ok cool"

@ptribble we got DPKG running on Solaris 10 SPARC, for cursed reasons. We're now trying to get apt running. After all, FractalKit is going to get updates, and Solaris 10 never did get a networked package manager...

Is there anyone in #Australia or #NZ, or who would be willing to ship to NZ, who could donate a #SPARC #Solaris (sun4u/sun4v) machine to the building effort for FractalKit? We're running up against some limits and some really bad time sinks, doing all of this on a 650MHz #UltraSPARC IIe is.... really really painful. We know this is a long shot, but if anyone out there has a machine they could donate to this we would be immensely thankful. This porting effort is really important to us but it's not going to be actually useful if a single library takes a day to compile. If you can't help, then please boost? @SolarisDiaspora

weird phone nerd question for those on fedi with the phone autism: was Rockdale, GA's regional center the only 4A with the satellite uplinks to Kingston, Jamaica? We know Greenville NC homed on Rockdale as its regional, and we know that the operator route for that area (180+83+6D, numbers were..... 171+, we think) went through a satellite link, it's obvious, but did it have to home on Rockdale for that? Or did other 4As have trunks. How would that route work from NY, did New York 4 or 7 have trunks there, would it have to go up to White Planes 1, or which?

@hellomiakoda where we come from, removal of the MD_LINEAR target would be announced, loudly, years in advance, overt warnings about using it across every kernel version following that anouncement, documentation on how to convert MD_LINEAR arrays to some other format without data loss, offers to externalise that target into a best-effort support module, and then, maby 8-10 years after the announcement, *then* it gets removed. As far as we could tell, the Linux removal of that target went like this:

LKML dev 1: should we remove MD_LINEAR?
LKML dev 2: yeah, fuck it! *yank*

@hellomiakoda not so much the userland, but the kernel as well. it feels.... shaky? the fact that they just hard-yanked the MD_LINEAR target, no warning, no nothing was.... kind of a wakeup call for us, we were trying to get some data off a Synology's disks and were this close to thinking the raid array was lost.... it wasn't, it's just that modern Linux yanked support for that target for......reasons? and it just gave us this sense of "holy shit. in the past 10 years, we've seen an incredibly janky init system become the default, more network managers than there are german transfems, 271.5 new desktop environments per minute, 3 or 4 incompatible and potentially conflicting audio servers, a switch away from *the* *standard* Unix display model to something very.......... app-y, and then... unfortunately what made us drop out of the Linux thing was, sadly, NixOS. Very cool idea............. as a research paper. as a proof of concept. Brutal violations of Unix traditions going back a very, very, very, very long time, and at that point we had to just drop out. We couldn't, anymore, with the constant adding and changing of features and the seeming need to change things for the sake of change

@hellomiakoda it.... is.... kinda. this one is increasingly of the opinion that Linux is... kind of like plan 9. a research OS, constantly having people poke at it and fuck with it, very much a moving target. rather the reason this one ceased entirely to use Linux in its infrastructure
