do you ever think about how, in all likelihod, more people in history have heard modem noises as an audio gimmick on youtuber videos communicating "this is slow" than out of a literal modem?
i'm actually quite pleased that the v.34 handshake, instead of fading into obscurity as analog PSTN lines get decommissioned, gained a second life as a cultural object communicating something useful
@freya re: accuracy: - the part that i think is accurate to the Lore™ is the North American dialtone, but i'm used to the dialtone from ITU +7, which are different in frequency - from my memory (of over 20 years ago), there should be something else in the handshake at the ~35 second mark
