    do you ever think about how, in all likelihod, more people in history have heard modem noises as an audio gimmick on youtuber videos communicating "this is slow" than out of a literal modem?

      i'm actually quite pleased that the v.34 handshake, instead of fading into obscurity as analog PSTN lines get decommissioned, gained a second life as a cultural object communicating something useful

      @whitequark Reminded me of windytan's excellent infographic that explains a modem sound. https://www.windytan.com/2012/11/the-sound-of-dialup-pictured.html?m=1

        If you ever connected to the Internet before the 2000s, you probably remember how it sounded. But what do these sounds mean?

      @whitequark hey, we put something together for you, how accurate does this sound? and if you can tell the phone number being dialed you get a cookie

      @freya re: accuracy:
      - the part that i think is accurate to the Lore™ is the North American dialtone, but i'm used to the dialtone from ITU +7, which are different in frequency
      - from my memory (of over 20 years ago), there should be something else in the handshake at the ~35 second mark
