@Gargron For a while, I read Mastodon without an account. While I had to rely on the explore tab or live feeds only, and couldn't comment (which was what finally got me to; I had Thoughts), it worked pretty well and allowed me to get a sense of the vibe a lot better than attempting the same for Facebook or the-Musk-playground-formerly-known-as-Twitter would.

Question, since I assume from the frequency of these postings you follow Turkish politics more than I do: do you know if this autocracy came top-down -- i.e., Erdogan first, then at a more local level -- or bottom-up -- i.e., democracy was already nonexistent or quite weak at the local level and Erdogan reflects that?

@quinn there's also bad stuff going on in afghanistan, burkina faso, burundi, the central african republic, chad, china, the drc, eritrea, ethiopia, haiti, iran, madagascar, mauritania, myanmar, niger, somalia, south sudan, ukraine, and yemen. some of those are genocides. but also, equally periodic reminder that stuff does not need to be a genocide to be horrific and worthy of being stopped!
