Most of the focus on the House passing the budget bill is on the numbers. (It is a budget bill.)

But this, as the screenshot says, should it survive the Senate, completes the transition of the US to a dictatorship.

We were warned. We didn't pay enough attention.

@Amoshias All true. That said, if passed, it codifies it. Making it, for all practical purposes, difficult to ever roll back.

I'd also argue that the rule of law no matter how many times it's trotted out in defense of one thing or another is no longer how this country is governed or adheres to norms and traditions.

A paradox has been and is being created, given those with power the ability to play both offense and defense as best suits the moment for their aims.

@WarnerCrocker while this is 100% an indication of the continued erosion of norms, this provision in and of itself doesn't really matter.

If the rule of law still exists, this is a blatant violation of the separation of powers and courts can clearly just ignore it.

Since the rule of law doesn't exist, courts will not find the administration in contempt anyway, or at least the administration would ignore it.

The bill is unconstitutional. -- Yet they're likely going to pass it anyway.

@WarnerCrocker the budget bills have historically always been a clown fiesta and basically the Super Bowl of partisan legislation. It’s no surprise - okay the content is surprising - some sneaky crap gets put in.

There’s also no justifiable reason to add subversion of the rule of law outside of doing nefarious or unlawful things. No matter how anyone minces the words, impeding progress, or whatever the rhetoric of the day is.

I want immunity for not paying taxes. Can I have that? No?

@elebertus This may be a budget bill per se with sneaky things in it. But with that provision it takes on an entirely new definition with its subverting of the once venerated, now damaged, rule of law.

The gimmicks are nothing new. This is a bigger deal than just the traditional gimmickry.

@WarnerCrocker absolutely. This is an unprecedented level of insane BS.

There’s absolutely no legislator that has their constituents front of mind, or protecting the constitution front of mind that would sign off on this.

The way you put it as damaging is right on point. No matter who the president is now or in the future it would subvert the entire judicial branch. Which is 1/3rd of the basis of the how the government operates.

May as well write in that voting is only allowed for land owners

@rootschange Not trying to be contrary when I say this, because calling is good, but most congressional (and Senate) offices are clearing out today for the long holiday weekend. If you call today, call next week, the week after, and the week after that.

If possible go to their local offices and voice your complaints in person.

@WarnerCrocker anyone with an internet connection and some amount of money can buy crypto, the barrier for land ownership is much higher.

      I get your sentiment though.

I’m more concerned with crypto becoming integral to the US benefits system though, but that’s another whole tin foil rant for me.

@WarnerCrocker oh yeah, I originally bought some just to make a quick buck but it went from 40/share down to a fraction of that and has stayed there.

I’m guessing it’s more likely a pedestrian shitcoin than something actually nefarious. I could be wrong!

@WarnerCrocker I cannot decide if this is worse or the (honestly forgot if it's gone through, things got put on hold after Oct. 7) proposed Israeli change that forbids the Supreme Court from overturning laws.
