@dansup The anti-competitor filters went live sometime ago. Meta is trying to avoid an exodus, that Twitter experienced.

I like Mastodon, but there are other platforms with more options.

My "favorite" version of the scam is the one where they claim to be a teacher or professor, with a disabled child, which sounds awful, except they over do their story by claiming they have no electricity, no internet, no phone service, and yet somehow have manifested themselves on the Fedi, on the internet, so they can ask for money.

Now, logically, how do you get online without electricity, without internet, and without any internet device, such as a phone (or computer)? Obviously, you don't.

What scam?

You discover someone following you claiming to be Israeli or Palestinian, with 1-2 post claiming they need money, along with a heart-filled story.

It is a scam because it is the same story (seen 4 versions) and with the same links (I saw 7). All this over many different accounts.

They follow 100's. The goal is someone will see their profile, believe the story, feel bad, and send money.

Everyone claiming to be from Israel or Gaza asking for money, will be reported as spam.

There are too many scammers, and they're sharing the same links over and over, with the same modified stories.

At best, they're scammers, at worse they're a group up to no good.

@jwz You're mad that your person, did not win. But you're unwilling to learn why, as a means to prevent it from happening again.

Perhaps, you were indeed a Trump supporter, after all. Since your way, would guarantee a repeat of history.

@jwz If you check my post history, going all the way back to May 30, 2023, when I first joined the Fedi, you'll note that I occasionally talk about working for Meta (Facebook).

One of the biggest problems concerning social media, is it creates echo chambers.

Echo chambers are not good for society, because it means folks stop listening to one another, and so stop learning and collaborating. This means people stop learning from one another.

Only Sharkey allows you to import your post at the moment.

The problem with Sharkey is they suck!

The current version, 2023.8.1 is slow. The development, filled with toxic people. The previous lead stole the server that was gifted to the development (along with any extra money), before leaving.

You do not want to get caught up with the nonsense that is Sharkey.

The Fediverse suffers from fragmentation too.

As I said, earlier, switching between Fedi instances is not without its risk. Much of it person between Fedi instances (usually drama related).

It is also the software platforms too. Although they're all using Activity Pub (ActivityPub), some of the API's process and prioritize content differently.

I can follow the same people on Mastodon and Misskey and end up with 2 different timelines.

So moving between Fedi instance is not without its risk.

I once had nearly 3,000 followers, when I 1st joined the Fediverse. But moving around, trying to find what I was looking for, has taken its toll.

@Linux currently has almost 1,000 followers. And it has taken me a while to get back to that.

If I wanted to shout into the void, by my lonesome, I would have started a WordPress site. I think that is true for many people here.

With nowhere to port into, the plan was to archive my content, save it for the future and hope another development would allow importing.

In the meantime, that means starting over on another Fedi instance.

That is not ideal, because when you move, you tend to lose a few followers along the way. Usually, because whatever Fedi instance you join, may have issues with another Fedi instance.

For example, there are a lot of instances that silence Mastodon dot Social.

So where am I?

In a state of limbo.

I have decided am not going to keep using Sharkey. The plan was to export my data and move to another Fedi instance. The problem is the Fediverse, will let you export your data, but at the moment you can only import into Sharkey.

WTF?! What is the point of exporting, if you have nowhere to import too?!

For example, you can export your post on Mastodon, but you cannot import your post on another Mastodon server.

Additionally, Mozilla is now an ad company, and embedded a "feature" (enabled by default) that tracks ad performance even if you have an ad blocker (uBlock, for example). Worse still, the development build of Firefox (Firefox Nightly) now has artificial intelligences (A.I.) incorporated into Firefox.

Google was labeled a monopoly (found guilty in court of being one). It is likely that the court will rule that Google can no longer pay to be someone's default search, which is what they were doing with Apple (22 Billion yearly) and Mozilla (450 million). Unfortunately for Mozilla, that accounts for 81% of their annual (yearly) revenue.
