I'm not sure how to feel about having all of my feelings about various siloed tech platforms, operating systems, and tech companies more broadly so fully and brutally borne out.

Like I hated FashBook long before it enshittified, I dumped reddit when it started blocking third-party API access, I stopped using Google years ago. Been using Linux since 2012.

I wish my choices were just down to me caring about privacy, owning my own data/software etc.

But JFC this ongoing abuse and exploitation of the users of these platforms really makes me wish I was just being weirdly eccentric rather than (accidentally) prescient.

FashBook banning mentions of "Linux" and "Distrowatch" really makes me feel even better about kicking that shithole platform to the curb years ago.
Running Linux and seeding distros FTW.

There is of course a lot of buzz around bsky at the moment, much of it positive. I am tempted, I'll be honest, but I remain highly skeptical.

I don't trust VC in any capacity, and when you take the VC money, eventually you will do the VC's bidding, irrespective of what values you *say you hold. Material analysis says that the material interests will dictate terms.

What I'm ultimately saying is that if you ever got *any utility out of Xitter, for professional or personal reasons, you might be comfortable on bsky. People who are fleeing Xitter *now, in 2024, clearly have found themselves a refuge from Elon's racist passion project.

But if you hated Xitter before, you will eventually hate bsky too, I am confident in that if little else.

So after @pluralistic put the RSS bug in my brain, I had a thought.

What if, say, @Tusky , which is an awesome Masto app, integrated an RSS feed reader into it.

Hear me out...

You could have the option of following accounts as RSS feeds, so that if you follow news accounts or anything you don't want to miss a post from, there would be a feed reader pane.

Sort of like rolling your own algorithm, but better.

Hey just spitballing here. Maybe something like that already exists, seems like a good and simple idea.
