Kirk was wearing a chest plate, the shot defected upward & blew his artery open. The shock from a rifle round on his chest plate provided more force to his sternum which is similar to a chest compression done during CPR, but with far greater force.

This force resulted in a massive & quick gushing of blood to flow out.

There is 2 frames of time for the chest plate & shirt pump, on the 3rd frame you can already see the hole in his neck.
