Google Meet, formerly Google Hangouts, formerly Google Chat, started life as just an XMPP server that Google ran and attached to GMail accounts. (Facebook Messenger was XMPP, too; at one point, it was possible to open up GMail and send a message to someone that was on Facebook. This was before "silo" was the only option.)
After a while, Google silo'd their XMPP server: you could still (at least for a while) log into it using a regular XMPP client, but you could only talk to other GMail accounts. Google cited "spam" as the main reason, but the reason was obviously closing the ecosystem.
Look. Please, hear me out: we can eliminate most of the spam on the internet if we convince Google to turn its email service into a silo. Think about it. And if they do it, maybe it's possible to convince Microsoft to wall off Hotmail/Outlook/whatever. Think about this.- Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell:, Doughnut Lollipop 【記録係】:blobfoxgooglymlem: and snacks and 5 others like this.

Where the hell did you get that from?
I am just suggesting that GMail become a real silo and no longer speak SMTP to other machines on the internet. Like when Gab decided to stop federating. -

@p@fsebugoutzone.org You're saying that the end of Eternal September can be brought about, theoretically, by having a few centralized global monopolies here and there, that sweep up the invader swarms back out of our beautiful wounded wired and into massive sandbox prisons where they can be happily stupid together? I don't. Spammers that want me to call them on Whatsapp do, though.
> I'm lucky if I get a few spam messages per year in total (with several domains routed into a catch-all inbox),

You can eliminate most of the spam on the internet by not using gmail in the first place. I manage my own SMTPd and compared to when I hosted the same domains using gapps/gmail where I was getting sometimes upwards of 2,000 spam messages per day with copious false positives, on my self-hosted email server I'm lucky if I get a few spam messages per year in total (with several domains routed into a catch-all inbox), and so far zero false positives. Either google's staff are utterly incompetent, or they allow it to be that way on purpose.Phantasm likes this. -

> I use a chain of several RBL's
If they didn't constantly blacklist me then I might think this was okay to do. Even if it was okay to do, then it still doesn't get rid of the spam from GMail.
> my setup refuses to even accept it in the first place
I know how it works, yes. I know how a mail server works. My mail server receives a bunch of shit from GMail and GMail silently discards mail from me. If I could eliminate the first problem, then the second problem wouldn't bother me so much. If GMail dropped the pretense of being an email system, then that would eliminate the first problem. That was the joke.
:lookhowtheymassacredmyboy: The joke is now dead.
> self-hosting eliminated effectively 100% of the spam and 100% of false positives basically overnight.
How do you know that you have no false positives if you rejected it before getting the message?
> I give them theirdomain.tld@mydomain.tld
Some of them block addresses that have their name as a substring.
I just make up aliases, and I have a few queued up so that I don't have to ssh to the mail server to add a new one. A lot of them filter spam@ so I made fcnz@, which filled up with spam, so I turned it off. (If I forget an alias, I just look at the To field for mail from the company in question.) -

@p
Fwiw, the main difference is I use a chain of several RBL's and I shut off addresses which are routinely targeted using postfix recipient_access and sender_access lists. Whereas gapps/gmail allows to filter inbound email into the spam folder, my setup refuses to even accept it in the first place (ie. responds with "550 Mailbox does not exist."). I also have spamassassin, but it basically never gets triggered because there's no spam received. But literally, they're the same exact domains and accounts which were formerly hosted by gmail/gapps, and switching to self-hosting eliminated effectively 100% of the spam and 100% of false positives basically overnight.
Another neat trick which I've been using long before I switched *to* gapps/gmail, is that when I have to register on any website or give out my email address to an untrusted party, I give them theirdomain.tld@mydomain.tld so when I do inevitably get spam, I can easily identify the source of the leak and shut it off. Works like a charm. Also a good source of laughs to see who got hacked or had their db sold to spammers. -
