How to know that scientifically-sounding article is full of shit, and I quote:
"Another grade of avgas, Avgas 100, contains higher amounts of lead and is still in widespread use."

@feld @tk
Avgas 100 was out of circulation for 40 years. The 100LL is the only fuel available worldwide. There's only 1 factory in the whole world that still makes TEL, in UK, and it's price is very high. Nobody would buy Avgas 100 if it were still available.
Also, 94UL is around. Unfortunately, the nearest pump to me is in Dublin, Texas, which is an hour away.
Either way, studies like that are constantly floating around. Some find the lead in children, some find no lead in children. The lead is going away no matter what, simply because the supply is not secure.

@sun @feld @tk One time a friend with a seaplane was giving me a ride to pick up my airplane from a whope where it was painted. On the way there he saw a river basically in the center of Austin and said "let's splash down". So he landed there then took off. The shores were all built up with houses and I asked if it would not disturb people. He replied that he lived at a lake like that (only in a cheaper part of town), and "trust me, boats are 5 times as loud as this airplane." Admittedly he had a Rotax 912 engine that had a decent muffler.

@tk @feld Apropos that... You may know that little prop airplanes are pretty loud, which is why everyone who flies them wears active noise-canceling headsets. And so, my tailwheel instructor lived in an airpark, and I commuted to his house for lessons. One day, I talked to his wife about living in an airpark, and she said: "It's amazingly quiet. We had no idea how noisy it was in the city until we moved here." I said: "But you literally live next to a runway where airplanes take off." And she said: "Yes, but that's only once in a while. The city noise is constant."

@sun What is your opinion about Hemi:

I know I ought to pay you for consulting. How about settling for vague promises of equivalent favours in the future.

@shibao @bonifartius @sun @a7
I get recruiter emails every day. The latest one was "Come do bash scripting for us. We pay $90/hr and it's a contract position for 8 months." I was getting $160/hr back in 1999 hacking on FiberChannel drivers for Solaris kernel. I suspect the biggest problem is that wages went way down, while people have a hard time downgrading their standard of living.

@bonifartius @shibao @sun Wife of my dojo sensei retired as a middle school teacher, went to a ML+Python bootcamp, got a job as a "data engineer". All that about a year ago. Like, literally. No personal connections with the company. She started out on a poverty wage of about $45k but they promise $90k after the probation period. Oh and she's in her 50s, disabled in a wheelchair.

It was a "yes but also no" for me.
I have never in my career was able to find a job by applying to positions. Although contrary to the common opinion, my CV never was rejected by filters. In just the last 5 years, I applied 5 times - about one job per year. Every time, I was rejected after interviews with the hiring panel.
So, looking back, I was only ever able to get a job through I had connections. For example, Alan Cox recommended me for Red Hat (some may still remember him, he's even on Fediverse).
My latest job change was through a recruiter. It's completely cold and I didn't know anyone at all.

One correction - I was rejected by Sun Microsistems and Transmeta pre-interview. Both of them did it multiple times. Sun sent me 2 postcards, which unfortunately I didn't preserve. Or it would be a funny shitpost. That was between 35 and 25 years ago, so hardly relevant.

@sun @amerika Or overestimate your abilities. Or your luck is bad.
I once been to a seminar that featured Bud Maelstrom (you don't need to know who he is but just roll with it). In a break between getting my face pounded in and in the dirt, we chatted about this and that and he said: "In combat, you can never be certain about win, no matter how superior you are. Consider the following scenario. A special forces team of 13 goes out on a mission. They are all equally equipped, equally trained. And then one of them steps on a landmine."
