@ai6yr I think the Technics SL-1200 is still the standard DJ record player (as much as vinyl DJs still exist)

I see working SL-QD33s on eBay for around $300

@Chaos_99 @thomasfuchs Not at all. I was poor (lower middle class anyway), my first stereo was my mom’s old one that was probably at least 20 years old, and worked for years until I gave it away, still working

It wasn’t as nice or expensive as Thomas’s, but it was built to last

With products that last decades, you can buy used ones or get them for free from friends who get a new one, even if they were expensive new. They didn’t just get tossed out after a couple years like everything today, they were still being used by people who couldn’t afford new ones

@Chaos_99 @thomasfuchs That’s maybe a nicer model, but everything Thomas says is true about cheaper models (except the power) that nearly every household had. Families that could afford a “nice” car and TV typically had a “nice” stereo too. Spending the equivalent of €4000 is less painful when it’s something that will last decades. Some people spend that much on gaming computers every few years these days

@dtgeek @inthehands It’s weird how many software company bosses are eager to tell the world they’re completely incompetent at software engineering and operations

The cloud provider makes it too easy to delete backups? Their access tokens are too permissive? Who chose that cloud provider for running critical systems? Who chose to run an unpredictable agent in that environment?

@arstechnica It could just be that Mozilla is bad at security 😆

(I don’t think they are, unless they’ve gotten really bad recently, but this is not really data, it’s just another ad for Anthropic)

@tommorris @thomasfuchs is there any other technology where the bosses want to see their bills go up? It’s not like they fire engineering teams if they don’t use AWS enough… quite the opposite in my experience, they’re usually trying to lower AWS bills

“Management has noticed you’re not drinking enough coffee…”

    It’s a cargo cult

I feel like we should be using the term “robber baron” more. From Wikipedia:

“By the late 19th century, the term was typically applied to businessmen who used exploitative practices to amass their wealth. Those practices included unfettered consumption and destruction of natural resources, influencing high levels of government, wage slavery, squashing competition by acquiring their competitors to create monopolies and/or trusts that control the market, and schemes to sell stock at inflated prices to unsuspecting investors.”

That sounds like some people I know…

Let’s be clear about some things:

The United States should be regarded as a rogue nation at this point. The only goal is more power and wealth for Donald Trump.

He’s a bully, and he has two of the biggest sticks in the world: the US military and the US economy. Using them as weapons is going to damage them.

The job and funding cuts combined with the tariffs and unpredictability seem likely to cause a recession.

The pogrom against trans people has started in the form of rule changes that outlaw their existence.

The pogrom against non-white people has started in the form of immigration raids, and the preparation of Guantánamo Bay to become a concentration camp. We all know this is about race, not citizenship.

“Pogrom” is a strong word, but, I fear, the correct one.

@ai6yr the hops do different thing depending on when they’re added. Early in the boil they add bitterness, later they add flavor, and toward the end they add aroma. It’s not unusual to use different hops for bittering/flavor/aroma

And yes, the malt is the sugar. We always did the same thing, rinse out the container with hot wort
