Other programs, such as Krita, Photopea, and Affinity, are just leagues above it in terms of capability.

Jokes aside, it's gotten harder and harder to trust that big companies have our interests at mind. I know funding is essential for bettering the open-source software ecosystem and developers need compensation for their hard work, but we need to consider the needs of the community as well. They're the ones who also helped open-source get off the ground, and it'd be a massive dick move to just invalidate their effort by listening to what the companies want instead (whether it'd be EEE, moving away to unfree licensing, or implementing user-hostile anti-features).

Ultimately, the end goal of open-source is that we want our software to keep looking after users. Neither keeping your software looking like the 1980s (like come on, a pure art program like Krita is better at image editing than you, GIMP) nor letting companies that lost their trust control the project fulfill this.
