@missfeast@social.xenofem.me This meme has the energy of a kid on Xbox Live saying "suck my dick you fucking homo" while holding back tears after I beat his sorry ass :neofox_cry::blobfoxangrylaugh:
@phnt@fluffytail.org@foxcat@pl.foxcat.lol@dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest control over what apps an app-store hosts and distributesWouldn't setting up alternative F-Droid repositories have worked better, then? Devs who no longer feel confident with F-Droid itself shouldn't give up on F-Droid in favor of the fucking god-awful Play Store, nor have to settle with making users manually update through Github. Instead, F-Droid allows one to add in alternative repositories if they dislike the current selection or want more up-to-date apps directly from the developer. You can even download alternatives that are 100% compatible with F-Droid, such as Aurora-Droid and Droid-ify (which I use personally). The thing with open protocols in general is that it's easier to build alternatives to something, and to me, it makes better sense to embrace that than to just give up on the project itself. :blobfoxconfused:
@dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest@phnt@fluffytail.org Huh, did this stem from the original controversy concerning them promoting Brave Browser? I dislike the browser itself, but it's likely that they just didn't know what Brendan Eich or his company did, since not everyone is caught up with drama.
As for the Husky project, I also don't know what they did besides being associated with Pleroma, which is petty (you will always have disgusting people in a userbase, and Pleroma's dev community is comfy in my experience), and not wanting to block instances from the app, which I think is fine, as Fedi clients are tools, not communities.
@icedquinn@blob.cat The especially interesting thing is that Scott the Woz is American, and he pronounces the t's in the middle like the British. Wonder if other Americans, such as those in the Midwest where Scott is from, also pronounce it like that :drgn_think__w_:
Uhh, stupid observation, but I just noticed Scott the Woz pronounce button as "bu-on."
Not sure why that's interesting, like when I also say button as "buddon" and butter as "budder." I guess that speaking is more complex than I thought. :neofox_think:
@icedquinn@blob.cat I deleted the post itself because it sucked (Most people know jackshit about whatever drama happened, and we shouldn't be mad at them for that), but I have a feeling most of the hype towards Brave comes from being the other mainstream privacy browser. I would recommend other browsers, such as Floorp, Zen, and Librewolf, but for most people just starting to learn more about privacy, you have the choice between a slightly better Chrome and a slightly worse one run by privacy-washing multi-millionare grifters. :neofox_think:
@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo How about the Unhook add-on? There's flimsy evidence that Sponsorblock and Adblock hurt creators, but Unhook saves the users from the single most evil part of Youtube: its algorithm. Recommendation algorithms can be useful (I love using Skyfeed's Discover Feed in Bluskey), but there's no cnsequences to removing Youtube's algorithm at all. in fact, it has been the feature I despise the most, with how it promotes sensationalist trash at best and often pushes people into more extreme circles that only harm society but that makes Google money (death to far-right drama channels). People have to acknowledge how objectively evil it is, even if they whine about "how it helps them 'discover muh cool creators'" (no it fucking doesn't; find a better way to watch videos to eat dinner to).
Unhook solves this. It lets me just explore the Subscriptions page in peace. It lets me just do something else after a video is done. Only thing bad about it is that Youtube keeps introducing new bullshit, meaning channel homepages are infected with "fOR yOU" bullshit and searching videos still fucking sucks. There's still a lot to fix about this dumpster-fire of a video platform, but Unhook is a brilliant start. :neofox_heart:
@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo On paper, Youtube Premium actually seems like one of the best subscription services, actually. Offline videos Malvertisement-free streaming Music streaming Supporting creatorsThen, you remember:Google can't make good software The algorithm is fucking dogshit You can just use Patreon or Ko-fi to support creators In practice, Youtube piracy is still the only way to preserve videos on that platform In practice, lower tiers still force you to watch the most evil and fake malvertisements out thereThese cold-blooded dweebs in Big-tech proved how unworthy they are of even basic respect with a free product. Why should I have a reason to pay, them, then? :blobfoxangry:
I used to not understand why a lot of Linux advocates disliked or even hated GNU Nano, but looking back on it as someone who is now a Vim user, damn does this feel so inefficient to use :god_enel_shocked:
So many Youtube commenters have the brainpower of a 1990s Intel Celeron... :blobfoxangry:
It's basically why I'm so annoyed when they also proclaim that "they're above social media." No, you fucking aren't. You let a badly-written computer program decide what to watch, and it is deciding for you some of the lowest-brow, soulless, SEO maximized shit one can ever lay their eyes upon.
Hey!I'm Poppy Farbird, a queer (she/they) furry artist who wants to work with technology and the admin of Citrus Plaza. Specifically, I both create artworks of anthros (though they are on my other account) and boost other artists' fascinating works. For technology, I try to integrate open-source projects the best I can. I have Linux on my gaming PC, use software like Codium, Onlyoffice, Krita, and such, and sometimes promote these projects to others. In the future, I also want to support them financially and through commits in their codebase. I'm also trying to get into things like web design and animation. Anyways, it's just nice to be in the Fedi, which has one of the best communities on the internet.
