    This is so fucking cucked. Years of these things being Laptop powerful and the "desktop mode" isn't even fucking functional

    What's the use of a desktop mode too if you're gonna need daddy Google's permission to install anything

      @coolboymew the convergence dream is deader than GNU Hurd and some people just never got the memo.

      @scathach @prettygood Yeah, it need to be able to switch between the two, like the steamdeck is doing, for example

      The problem is that once again, iOS and Android are shitty toy OSes, and toy OSes makes no sense on Desktop

      @prettygood @coolboymew What's really weird to me about a lot of the "convergence" attempts is that they're trying to extend a phone interface to work on a desktop instead of just installing a dedicated desktop environment to run alongside it

      Theoretically quite easy to have a full desktop Linux running on Android in termux, supposedly it's quite usable too

      @prettygood @coolboymew I imagine it would only require a bit of plumbing to get Android functionality exposed in the Linux environment

      @sapphire But then there's no point. The point is that you can use your phone as a desktop, as it should be capable to do, you should be able to dock the thing in a dock, and have it be a full computer, you should've been able to do this years ago

      @coolboymew Apple did it way better, instead of running your desktop on your phone you can run your phone on your desktop instead

      @sapphire you would be surprised at the amounts of retards that buys 1k flagship phones and just do YouTube and Facebook with it

      Besides, you can get decent 2-3 years old flagship phones at 1/3 of the cost refurb, so if these had full OSes, they WOULD be fantastic cheap computers if they weren't so fucking locked and shit

      @coolboymew yeah, in a nebulous "its a device I own and I want to do whatever I want with it" freetard sense, but realistically what is the section of the population that 1. can afford and 2. wants to own a $1200 smartphone but 1. can't afford or 2. doesn't want to own a $300 laptop or NUC that outperforms it?

      It only make sense if you restrict the usage of it as you'd do for toddlers, which is the direction that google&co goes for. Even if it is at the cost of productivity or even social stability.

      @prettygood @coolboymew GNU Hurd is alive and kicking - GNU/Hurd runs GNU Emacs just fine - what more could you need?

      @Suiseiseki Torsocks seems to work with emacs. You could use SOCKS5 with that.

      @nexussfan I like seeing images.

      w3m might work, but the bloated html features of bloat would make it hard to use.

      Ideally I could use dillo, but it doesn't allow the needed cookies, so I can't login.

      @prettygood@socially.drinkingatmy.computer @coolboymew@shitposter.world Feels like convergence was just a meme to make the smartphone more exciting than it actually is, which is still genuine improvement compared to keypad phones but we’re talking about an industry that made the revolutionary Internet look overhyped in 2000. There’s just too much demand for dedicated devices that do one thing well even when they don’t look “le futuristic,” whether it’s consoles being a better home for real games or Windows and Linux still bring better for office and creative work than a dinky Smasnug :blobcat_shrug:
