    I've been fairly consistently having nightmares about radiation for quite a few months now

    In this case there was a thunderstorm where the rain contained fallout for some reason and I spent the whole time being incredibly paranoid to not let any of it touch my body

    @snacks As a side note, a useful rule of thumb in radiation safety is that the more penetrative a type of radiation is the less damage it does, and vice versa

    Ionizing radiation penetrates very deeply (hence why X-rays work) which in physical terms means it doesn't interact with atoms very much, so there needs to be quite a lot of it to have an impact

    On the other hand, alpha and beta particles are EXTREMELY damaging but are so big and cumbersome that they can be stopped by pretty much anything

    @snacks The light coming towards you would be blue-shifted but that doesn't mean it's ionizing

    Ill effects from EM radiation have less to do with the wavelength and more to do with intensity

    @snacks EV is a measure of the kinetic energy a particle gains when accelerating through a potential difference of one volt

    Lead nuclei are much heavier than protons, so a given voltage won't accelerate it as much

    It's like if you kick a football vs a rock with the same amount of force, rock won't move as much

    @snacks You experience the Doppler effect every single day with sound waves, eg when a car passes you. There's no increase or decrease in the amount of sound produced, rather as the car gets closer to you the sound waves compress in wavelength and as it gets further away the sound waves extend in wavelength; it's purely a matter of where you are physically relative to the thing producing the noise

    Exactly the same deal with red and blue shift
