Just saw my first stone come in from this company.

    … Fucking India man.

The “certified marquise” cut was shaped like a banana and shipped with $100 worth of packaging and self-issued certs.

I had to tell them there is no way to recut and keep it over 2ct, and falling under that line will kill the value.

Mad respect to the guy who cut the crown: he made a Herculean effort to meet and match the absolute SHIT CAN of a pavilion on the stone.

@sun @eriner Gillette was confused about why they were having a terrible time selling razors in China.

Apparently they forgot the only Chinese guy with the kind of facial hair that needs a five blade monstrosity is Zhang Fei.

@sun @eriner Tokyo must have a few foreign groceries. Usually they import stuff like that. You won’t get your choice of brands.

Imaging paying $10 for a 2 liter bottle of Mug root beer 😭

@eriner @sun You are sooner to get people in Asia to understand that than you are to get them to understand cinnamon-flavor in desserts or the taste of root beer.

Cinnamon is only used for stewing meat in Asia.

Mint is only used for toothpaste. Mint chocolate chip ice cream is compared to toothpaste.

Root beer makes people vomit because it activates the same taste receptors as herbal medicine.

Licorice is only used as an expectorant.

@adiz @eriner @sun Lucky to even have a Mexican place. There was only one legit Mexican place in Beijing and they went out of business in two years. Everything else was vomit inducing Tex Amex where you’d see shit like “tamales” folded in black garbage bag plastic instead of corn husks.

@eriner @sun Every time I cooked and required cheese in Beijing had to pay shit tons of money to buy imported Kraft and Land of Lakes. And yes, that was the best shit you could get unless you paid CRAZY money for Italian stuff, and there might be one distributor for that for every 10 provinces.

@Soy_Magnus @dj @ArdainianRight @Hoss They make the silver thin to save money. It's not hard to ding it.

A lot of teapots wobble because the rounded rings at the base is bent.

That's one of the obvious things to tell plate from silver at a glance: actual silver teapots almost never have feet.

They also usually have mother of pearl or something bridging the handle because silver is a perfect conductor of heat, meaning a teapot with a silver handle will cook your hand.

@Hoss @dj @ArdainianRight @Soy_Magnus If you're going to pay Paul Revere prices then yeah I'm sure someone will break out the ball vise and the chisels and the chasing hammer and do you some bomb ass engraving.

But this is from the era of mass produced sterling.

Your random jeweler isn't any more likely to have a pro engraver than they are to have an on-site gemcutter. Even in New York.

Catalog item with bare minimum customization via wraparound templates.

@Hoss @dj @ArdainianRight @Soy_Magnus Rounded surface. They could only really stencil it. Machine engraving was only for flats.

If you're talking about stamping, you need something on the inside and it's a pain in the butt to follow the curve so none of the metal deforms.

Even ring hallmarks driven into curved brass deform the band and require hammering out.

It's above the pay grade of the average salesperson, and the people ordering this weren't paying pro engraver prices..

@hakui @dj @ArdainianRight @Soy_Magnus @Hoss Once the gov gets done raping your puppet hole, the ivory disappears from the evidence locker and goes to a private auction in Hong Kong or Singapore.

China has the same thing with panda pelts.

Cops go to poverty holes where people are barely surviving and dangle an offer for any families who still have panda pelts from when they used to hunt them.

Cops take the pelt, say it’s proof you shot a panda, execute you, and disappear the pelt to auction.

@Soy_Magnus @dj @ArdainianRight @Hoss These go to a decanter set and were popular with New York Jews for Manischewitz. There are normally six cups. Engraving work was done point of sale which is why it sucks. The silver decanter they go with is actually really nice. I have a set I picked up about a decade ago from another silver dealer.
