Jezza™> Through his mother's noble Italian Carandini family, he traced his ancestry directly back to Charlemagne, the 8th-century Holy Roman Emperor, a lineage so distinguished that Emperor Frederick Barbarossa granted the family the right to bear the imperial coat of arms in the 12th century. He released a symphonic metal album, Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross, narrating his ancestor's saga.
@mangeurdenuage so fuck most people? as a developer, why should I take responsibility for a dozen different distribution systems, or limit the distribution of my work to people who are competent to build software?
@verita84@mangeurdenuage there's a pattern here: people want things, someone comes up with a solution, and a whole bunch of people who contribute nothing to that process bitch as if religiously offended.
In theory, if you don't like the solution to a problem, you are free and able contribute a better one... but this does not happen. This is why Poetteringware like systemD is still in use 15 years later.
"whole ecosystem" packaging like flatpak and so on is a response to the dizzying number of distributions and the sometimes wide differences in versions or choices of packages. It is literally a response to the sheer number of configurations and their variability. It won't go away until or unless the underlying issues are addressed.
> SystemD is not "just an init." That's precisely why it replaced init. It was built incrementally.
If people built a superior solution, it would replace SystemD just as SystemD replaced init because it was easier to manage, parallelized startup for greater speed, and managed dependencies more sanely.
Seriously, if it's this big a problem, where's the replacement? Who's working on that? No one? Why not you?
When you refer to spaghetti code, are you referring to your own audit/experience, or is this a popular trope that you're sharing?
> Aka I'll make the logo you do the code. That would be a contribution. Non-coders contribute a lot -- an comprehensive icon pack is no trivial exercise even if not a line of code is written.
> ... automated solution So vendor compiled apps. Vendors like OpenSUSE and Redhack, for example, that everyone complain are compromised by corporate interests. It's a problem, but proffered as a solution by the same people who complain about it?
@BowsacNoodle most criminals aren't going to have early life details online, but nothing stops a plugin from querying wikipedia and scanning early life if there's a match.
@BowsacNoodle we need a list of euphemisms, and maybe a plugin that auto-translates them to what they are. It'd be really cool if it could, for example, take "teen killed by car" and translate it to "teen killed by black man with a car." Even if it's occasionally wrong, it will be more right than the news articles it attempts to correct...
