@hakui @dj @ArdainianRight @Soy_Magnus @Hoss You need an unbroken chain of documentation showing it predates the ban. Almost no one has that, and if they did they would send it to an auction house.
Ivory people have kicking around the house never has that documentation and the government treats it the same as if you went out and shot an elephant today.
Anyone offering to sell you ivory is more likely a government agent out to fuck you like Kermit than a bumbling noob.

The funny thing is apparently there's a decent amount of Mammoth ivory out there but it can't be traded because there's no reliable way to distinguish it from elephant ivory. -

@Soy_Magnus @istvan @ArdainianRight @Hoss @dj the extra work you have to do to prove that it was extracted from before the legislations kicked in is not worth it -

@hakui @dj @ArdainianRight @Soy_Magnus @Hoss Some people saved their import receipts. Have seen pieces that still had old export stamps from long, long ago. Layout can get some expert to inspect the stamp and make a notarized document confirming its authenticity.
And I’m sure people fake those too if you have the connections for it. I don’t.

@istvan @dj @ArdainianRight @Soy_Magnus @Hoss anyone who bought ivory before the ban wouldn't have asked for documentation anyway because they wouldn't have expected that it would be needed in the future Hoss Delgado likes this. -

@hakui @dj @ArdainianRight @istvan @Hoss naw this ones stamped sterling but if u ever see "chinese silver" or "copper silver" thats another term for g silver and it has no silver content tho it can look VERY convinving to an untrained eye. Pretty much avoid anything coming out of china its almost all fraudulent Hoss Delgado likes this. -

@Soy_Magnus @dj @ArdainianRight @Hoss These go to a decanter set and were popular with New York Jews for Manischewitz. There are normally six cups. Engraving work was done point of sale which is why it sucks. The silver decanter they go with is actually really nice. I have a set I picked up about a decade ago from another silver dealer.

@hakui @dj @ArdainianRight @Soy_Magnus @Hoss Once the gov gets done raping your puppet hole, the ivory disappears from the evidence locker and goes to a private auction in Hong Kong or Singapore.
China has the same thing with panda pelts.
Cops go to poverty holes where people are barely surviving and dangle an offer for any families who still have panda pelts from when they used to hunt them.
Cops take the pelt, say it’s proof you shot a panda, execute you, and disappear the pelt to auction.

@Hoss @dj @ArdainianRight @Soy_Magnus Rounded surface. They could only really stencil it. Machine engraving was only for flats.
If you're talking about stamping, you need something on the inside and it's a pain in the butt to follow the curve so none of the metal deforms.
Even ring hallmarks driven into curved brass deform the band and require hammering out.
It's above the pay grade of the average salesperson, and the people ordering this weren't paying pro engraver prices..

@Hoss @dj @ArdainianRight @Soy_Magnus If you're going to pay Paul Revere prices then yeah I'm sure someone will break out the ball vise and the chisels and the chasing hammer and do you some bomb ass engraving.
But this is from the era of mass produced sterling.
Your random jeweler isn't any more likely to have a pro engraver than they are to have an on-site gemcutter. Even in New York.

@Soy_Magnus @dj @ArdainianRight @Hoss They make the silver thin to save money. It's not hard to ding it.
A lot of teapots wobble because the rounded rings at the base is bent.
That's one of the obvious things to tell plate from silver at a glance: actual silver teapots almost never have feet.
They also usually have mother of pearl or something bridging the handle because silver is a perfect conductor of heat, meaning a teapot with a silver handle will cook your hand.
