An important difference between economics and physics/chemistry etc in the context of this discussion is that they are once separated from societal impact. E.g., one needs the engineering professions before nuclear physics means anything concrete. In contrast, there is no such thing as an "economic systems engineer". Economists routinely, profitably, and frequently disastrously play that role.

    @jackofalltrades

something that delays what one might call the inevitable process of moving to "a new and less broken economics" is that its... really hard. I have read and reread Raworth's Doughnut Economics (and will read it again soon) but it is still a call to action, a to-do list.

Mainstream economists benefit from cookie-cutter frameworks, conceptually flawed but accepted as publish (or perish) toolkits.

in extreme form (like #facebook basics in the Filippines) https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/jul/27/facebook-free-basics-developing-markets its essentially #digitalcolonialism.

An entire country exists online only via some #surveillancecapitalism platform.

Like old style colonialism, its predicated on rapacious foreigners bribing colluding locals to extract and exploit whaever value there is.

Its one of the major disgraces of our era, alas hardly even acknowledged yet.

@smallcircles @manlycoffee what I would ideally like to have is a layered #activitypub approach (its core, mantle, crust if we use a geological analogy) where each additional layer provides enhanced functionality and eventually things split into continental plates that do their own specialties.

At the very core it could be something very simple, e.g., servers ping each other, exchange actor lists, basically just establish what the network is. Next level support #rss type notifications etc.

It might be useful to define what different levels of interoperability mean as more diverse implementations with very different motivations and use cases enter the network (that can never fully interoperate and would not need or want it)

There is probably something like the "minimum" interoperability that is required and useful but this is not jumping at you from the specification. Maybe thats why conformance testing is still lacking?

@mnl they found out its a great marketing strategy (zero cost virality) and they are milking it for what it is worth.

The list of "AI and X" is long, it will take some time to exhaust it.

Heck, it so pervasive, even the 'I had enough of AI and X' goes viral :-)

    Patience, this too will pass.

Not quite sure what to make of this strand of thinking that probes the #climatechange impact of #war

On the one hand it is an objective, fact driven analysis. It doesn't improve the image of war as a policy option (for sane societies with ever more dangerous technology arsenals).

But it *is* awkward. Does it mean that if I plant X number of trees I can throw Y number of bombs? Is war more ok if my tanks are EV? And what of the reduced emissions from all those killed?

@djnavarro the bootlicking, sycophancy, hypocrisy, vacuity and manipulation that happens on #linkedin is just out of this world.

Its everything that is wrong with corporate world, twice distilled, condensed, to raise the potency of the stench.

In the end of the day all the amazing "social media" we were unlucky to be inflicted with in our lives ended up being abominations, but each in their own uniquely ugly way

We need a #fediverse alternative for professional profiles for humans

@devnull @david_megginson @davew @evan its when the neat, sequentially linked comments become a bushy tree if somebody replies to a comment higher up.

A busy "discussion" (that may last days or weeks) with many participants in different branches of the tree is very cumbersome to get an overview of. Like parallel, non-interacting universes.

Not to mention that every new joiner in the discussion reduces your available reply text length, but maybe that is a feature not a bug :-)

There seems to be a trend of people declaring on the profiles what shade of #doomerism / #optimism they feel attached to. A sign of our times I suppose.

My sense is that this more an emotional / character aspect than any purely rational argument.

But I am justifying my own (mostly) optimistic stance by stealing Pascal's timeless argument:

Even under the assumption that there is no hope, the potential benefits of thinking there *is* hope are so vast as to make betting on it rational.
