Do you know if it is possible and convenient to use guix home to manage home config of non-guix systems?

The news is that the owner of a messaging platform has been arrested because he didn't give to the authorities the informations about users they asked (legitimately or not).
I'd expect a comment on that, not a criticism of the implementation of said messaging platform.

I don't know other platforms but on Linux I have no issue if the application uses Secret Service API or KDE Kwallet or GNOME Keyring.
This plus encrypting the disk and you are fine until there is a security flaw in the software involved.
You can clone your disk and an attacker could too, but you can unlock it, the attacker not.

Alex L ๐ ๐ต๐ธ (alxlg@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 26-Feb-2024 00:13:56 JST Alex L ๐ ๐ต๐ธ In my opinion, #Guix is an overkill for anything except computer science research. I think an approach that has better chances to succeed is reusing the OCI ecosystem and in particular using #ComposeFS for a per-file deduplication, that is important for large datasets. The missing piece for me it's a package manager for knowledge i.e. that links papers, datasets, source code for both calculations and documents (LaTeX, #Typst etc) in a graph of dependencies, citations etc.

Guix eases exploration with โpackage transformation optionsโ, which let users deploy variants of the software environment, for example by applying a patch somewhere in the software stack or swapping one dependency for another. A โfrozenโ application bundle such as a Docker image does not provide this lever.
Why? And what do you mean by "opaque" container image?

Alex L ๐ ๐ต๐ธ (alxlg@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 00:10:55 JST Alex L ๐ ๐ต๐ธ Proprietary system with an open core? GitLab CE is the "open core" for you? It's basically the same as EE and yes the CE is free as in freedom, otherwise communities like KDE wouldn't use it, they have a very strict policy. And when KDE considered to migrate to GitLab, they asked GitLab devs for features they need to be available in CE and they agreed. This spirit of cooperation is gold.

To be clear, because people seem to think it's new: that plugin has been available for many years; literally one of the first ActivityPub implementations.
