Had a great conversation with @mike on the history of the hashtag, why Elon is wrong about it, the future of social networks (vis a vis #ActivityPub, #ATProto, etc), and how LLMs may intersect with social media moderation.
This was a good one.

I expected coverage of the fediverse but none was to be found on the interior
Hashtags are a tool for ad hoc group formation and free affiliation that defies gatekeepers.
No wonder Musk hates them.
It's why #IDemandHashtags and you should too.
You can now follow fediverse accounts on Threads!
"If [a fediverse user] follows, likes or replies, you can now view their profile and follow them from Threads. You’ll be able to see their posts and subscribe to notifications for new posts and replies."
Very interesting... fediverse accounts are prefixed with /fediverse_profile/

Harvard Business Review identifies AI generated editorial images in its print magazine.
It appears that Threads is working on a Communities feature called "Loop", which might be similar to subreddits or X Communities.
All I can tell is that you'll be able to Join and Leave. 🤷🏻♂️
This is new as of Threads v352.0.0.
@samsethi @_elena @tchambers @dave @mike @evan @js @james @adam Now you need to build last.fm for arbitrary fediverse activities! :)
Replies from the Fediverse can now be read on Threads!!

I don't care what anyone says. It's awesome to see fediverse replies appear on a Meta property.

An eclipse AND the Threads API? On the same day?! Praise be!
Great... moderated lecture from @mala with @mmasnick on #CognitiveLiberty as relates to the animating purpose behind the pursuit of decentralization.
We do not decentralize simply to decenter, but instead to preserve the muscle that affords us choice, agency, and self-sovereignty when we get lazy through centralization and (1/2)
Some number of Mastodon instances plan or are blocking Threads, but Threads also reserves the right to not federate with everyone.
Here's its current policy:
It's happening!!
I appreciate @pcottle's entreaty to the attendees of the #FediForum to engage with the Threads team genuinely.
Meta/Facebook have a mixed track record when it comes to open formats/standards (fool me once, etc etc); but at the same time, ushering in 130M potential new users to an open, social web is also an opportunity not to be dismissed out of hand.
I am optimistic that the current team is showing up with good intent and I intend to reflect that.
