"As Linux users, we often install Linux for friends and family, but many struggle with updates, packaging quirks, and system maintenance—leaving you to fix issues and them frustrated.

Instead of simply suggesting they get a Chromebook, what if we could create a similar experience with NixOS? My Nixbook project delivers automatic updates, easy Flatpak app installs, and sane defaults for everyday users.

In this talk, I’ll share how I built it and made it work flawlessly."

@killyourfm haha indeed. Cheers! And yes, ironically I've gotten some of my fave old Xbox 360 games going on the deck too.

I don't even consider myself a big gamer, but the deck and steam make me feel like one. And it's great.

@killyourfm ok well how about this. Theyre owned long-term. Games I bought 10 years ago are still installing and playing. And I can even share with my kids.

That's unheard of in console land. You end up buying those games over and over.

I suppose that's what I meant. Buy once and always be able to install and play.

@killyourfm but you are correct that it's not fully owned. It makes me groan a bit, but valve has really made this tradeoff worth it.

Esp when I got my stream deck, I installed Skyrim and it picked up my saved game from 7 years ago lol. That's wild and cool

Yes, it's a bigger initial investment than giving them Nintendo switches, but then you're plugged into a whole world of affordable games you actually own.

Pair that with the steam family account and game sharing... The cost makes up for itself within a year I think.

And my kids couldn't be happier. Me too.

@killyourfm the colored ones are the kids, and they're ok, but fit a bit loose and would probably not be great for the OLED.

Okay #AskFedi , after affirming my love and desire to be here and ignore the other stuff, I want to consider using #peertube instead of YouTube.

Is it pretty much the same thing as here, pick a server and off you go? Any tips or tricks?

I REALLY don't want to join #Bluesky and love it here on the fedi. But people keep telling me I just won't find enough people here to follow and engage with.
