@bonifartius @lohang most of us freeload on our instance's generosity, and actually have no standing to question such decisions. Those who contribute to their instance have some standing, and I think should be questioning instance-level blocks on principle. Maybe if individual accounts could be whitelisted by users, it would be workable.

    Hi.

You might recall my asking about your past thoughts on using #GDB as a #LSP server. While not LSP, I came across this neat #DWARF query tool `dwgrep` with a #Forth or #Factor style query language and thought of mentioning it

Maybe unpopular opinion: this isn’t sustainable

If you’ve got so many users on your instance(s) that it’s costing you $4k pcm (and however many tens of thousands of dollars he claims to have spent so far) and you need to solicit money from your users/community, this is not “decentralised”

Dan needs to stop amassing users and focus on building the software. Let other admins carry the load of actually running the service

I think there is a spec to match #Hubzilla etc. on this basic aspect, its an FEP about "conversation containers". I wonder if the server load argument is Mastodon/Rails specific and Pleroma/Elixir probably don't have that problem.

@alex I just realized I had never seen https://emacswiki.org down until now, a testament to the robustness of your setup and the size of the hit you (and everybody else like @corbet) are taking now.

Question: long-term, is there a "CDN" solution to this? Decentralized, like all content are #MagnetURI - the Bittorrent seeder rations bandwidth by design, and genuine clients of a popular website end up getting it via peers.

    So I guess I'm famous now :)

    https://www.heise.de/en/news/AI-bots-paralyze-Linux-news-site-and-others-10252162.html

To be clear, LWN has never "crashed" as a result of this onslaught. We'll not talk about what happened after I pushed up some code trying to address it...

Most seriously, though: I'm surprised that this situation is surprising to anybody at this point. This is a net-wide problem, it surely is not limited to free-software-oriented sites. But if the problem is starting to get wider attention, that is fine with me...

Does anybody know how non-Web URI's are handled in a WebView on Android?

I am using #Tiddloid on a local #TiddlyWiki in #Android which seems to be implemented in a #Webview. If I click https:// links, it opens the web browser. If I click callto: and payto: links, a permissions dialog for opening an external app is shown, but allowing it doesn't do anything.

@mathias there seem to be multi-protocol clients in various domains, you seem to want a multi-domain client. That seems like accidental coupling. Ditto on the server side. Even so, #Hubzilla and #Epicyon seem to do it on the server side. But different servers and clients with #SingleSignOn sounds better.

Any #Wikipedia editors around who can help? We are trying to get the article on #CHERI added. It's so far been rejected three times:

First, it did not have enough independent citations. We added a lot to news articles about CHERI.

Second, it was insufficiently detailed and lacking context. We added a timeline of development, a load of cross references, and a simple introduction.

It was then rejected again because it lacks an explanation that a 15-year-old could understand. This is true of 90% of science-related articles on Wikipedia, so I'm not sure how we fix it. An explanation at that level is something I can write (I have done for the #CHERIoT book!) but it would then make the page 3-4 times as long and not suitable for an encyclopaedia (I've previously seen pages rejected because Wikipedia is not the right place for tutorials).

I don't understand the standards for Wikipedia and I really need some guidance for how to resolve and progress this.
