@freakazoid it's also hostage voting. Talking to people about "saving democracy" while they feel a gun is being held to their head to vote who they are "supposed" to, and are in effect not even "permitted" to vote against the party in power means democracy is already dead. Getting the people to hold themselves hostage is brilliant gaslighting, though. But pretending to be saving democracy just makes it even more insulting.
@aral@LewisHarrington I am surprised the GOP hasn't come out championing "reparations", too, for the descendants of former slave owners who were deprived their "property" during the "war of northern aggression". I really shouldn't be giving them ideas...
@wdlindsy they are not a true random sample, though, but a self selecting one, and represent perhaps 5% of total Iowa voters. But that is the most positive take-away I can offer...
@yogthos there are always resources when your willing to use nukes... this is why claiming Iran is "days" away from having a nuke, as Netanyahu recently re-said, is so important. Of course they seem to be "days" away for a number of years now... Long days they have.
@superheroine when you in effect no longer even have the right to protest and vote against those in power, however it happens, you know you already no longer live in a democracy whatever else you wish to say about this situation. This too is very true and is very anti-democratic and in it's own way destructive, too. So if you must vote blue, at least call it what it really is, hostage voting by gunpoint. Don't even f*ckin pretend to call this a democracy.
@yogthos since I did oppose the assassination of Soleimani by the US, it would be hypocritical for me to celebrate this, but I do fear the west will respond with far less restraint than the Iranians did at the time. I recall how the execution of some violent US contract mercenaries lead to the US wiping out Fallujah, a war crime really only exceeded (and exceeded by far) by the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
@anneapplebaum Indeed, while the results and those who did vote are condemnable, the population as a whole is not, at least from this alone. Elections by a select few white racist voters is what the modern GOP wants as democracy.
@esparta sometimes we just add flags ;). I like cli arg libraries, but only when I can pair up different ones that can behave and look similar, from different languages. Consistency is actually what I try for most. My rust written cli app should not look different from my C++ or my golang one. Hence, for Rust I used clap, go-arg for go, and I have my own that matches these in my moderncli for c++.
@PeterLG@LindaCollins11 at one time Alexander conquered a large area and then built two jewels to cement control over the two then dominant places of science and learning in the world, and gave them his name, too. In the west, in Egypt, we got Alexandria. In the east, a city now so mispronounced it's not even recognized as such anymore; Kandahar.
@PeterLG@LindaCollins11 I am sure Trump imagines it would be something like the 4th Reich. In reality it likely will initially be much more like Putin's Russia, a kinda kleptostan. But yes, it could easily degenerate from there into a full blown gilead / klanistan. Once over the edge, I do not think the US will return to anything like before, not in 10 years, not in a 100.
@decentral1se there was a time I wanted to do a server with a rpi for dect phones and a sip bridge, but the hardware and specs seem rather closed to doing anything all that useful with them.
@PeterLG@LindaCollins11 I do consider this very possible at some point, too. Younger, idealistic officers who know what justice once was. I also think we will see an American Caracazo with federal troops deployed to urban centers.
@bigheadtales@GottaLaff indeed, many Americans really are that cruel and selfish. America's basket of deplorables is actually rather large. In that respect he is not an out-lander at all, but actually the quintessential American.
