Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: 'if you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?' @Melissabeartrix Joining Mastodon literally was the sole factor. Reading trans perspectives on everything. And learning one of my enby friends is trans who masks it in public for their own safety helped show me a lot of blind spots I had.

Didn't even take a whole year to learn my entire upbringing taught me to fear people all for reasons their oppressors made up.

Solution for restroom problems via politics when your business doesn't have the funds/space to redo it:

1. Put up a Round Bathroom sign with a man, woman, child inside it on all restrooms. If people seem confused, a nameplate that says "Unisex Bathroom" should straighten it up. If not, you got smart customers.
2. Install a door lock (one sided with a service pin release in case someone locks themselves in and doesn't respond), and sufficient amenities for any biological need for anyone at any age.
3. There is no step 3.

Men who need to go and the traditional 'Men's Room' being occupied can simply use the other one. Women don't need to rush while using an empty men's room in fear that a man is waiting when she's through. If there's baby stations, any bathroom can be a family bathroom if you lock the door. Bathroom has a tampon dispenser and a 'men can' next to your toilet? If you don't have the associated parts, simply ignore them.

If Firefish is going to come back, Kainoa won't have a hand in it. They quietly handed over the keys to the repo to a maintainer... who has publicly stated they aren't a programmer and are just looking after commits. Not exactly a signal things are starting back up.

Unless there is an announcement soon about someone taking up development again, I think it's safe to say Firefish is over as a Fedi platform.

Optimism wants to say that someone will, but at this point even if someone does it'll be playing catch-up to the current state of affairs. It isn't possible for someone to come off of the street and say "I'll do it" and go back to the pace that was happening last summer immediately. (But it's not impossible for me to be wrong and six months from now someone does. I'm just not banking on it happening. Even the Firefish name itself might be too damaged in reputation to even take back up.)

#Iceshrimp, #Sharkey, and #Catodon are #Misskey derivatives who are continuing onward with things. All three of them are disassociated with FF completely so it seems Misskey still has a future with non-Japanese users. Server admins who wanted to consider a Firefish instance but shied away from the drama last fall may want to follow those projects instead.

If your fedi server is still on Firefish, don't be surprised if an announcement "were taking signups on our new Plombus server, in X months Fleeb will be decommissioned" comes down sometime soon. Internet services without recent updates are asking for trouble from exploits and vulnerabilities. Also, without an active FF developer to fix standing issues (or a skilled DB admin on your instance's behalf to whittle the database and schema to fit the new system as well as possible) a cut-over migration where users don't lift a finger isn't in the cards like the Calckey to Firefish migration last September. It likely will be up to you to decide to either move your account Mastodon style (no post migration, just your follower lists and a link back to the prior server) or to just start fresh.

@ryanhoulihan Haven’t used TikTok. Not out of any elitism or generational hate or anything, more of “the future of social media should be thousands of villages with villagers, not thousands of accounts per villager.” Figured if I didn’t get it right off the bat then it’s not for me.

@Illuminatus @emilygorcenski Well, in technology, System Admins and higher do have this expectation. DDoS, outage, or failed hardware? When the boss calls at 1am, you're remoting in from home or taking a trip to address it.

That's normal, but also System Admins should be paid above non-exempt employees for being on call like that. If someone is being paid hourly in Tech for that on-call expectation, I agree, run for the hills. (Especially when an employer shorts hours later that week to avoid overtime pay when emergencies happen.)

@ajsadauskas @technology Amazing that his vision for the future is just being a "dude with a website". Someone putting WordPress, PHPbb, TinyWebGallery, and Elgg on a expensive colocated server and simply branding all of them as his. Visit the xBlog, talk on xBoards, shoot some xPics and use X for social media.

Don't even need any vision or motto: "Whatever you do, do it on X, not some other lame and inferior place I don't run." It was a stupid plan then, and it's stupid now. Countless Web 2.0 dudes had the same plan, and it always fell apart when it became "only my friends are here. How the heck do I monetize this without looking like an ass?"

What makes it dangerous is involving other people's money; the banking crap is still his end goal. (Could care less about sub fees, that’s caveat emptor. But checking and savings accounts when something goes wrong ruins people’s lives.)

Hopefully most of you see a pattern in most confrontations on Mastodon:

1. BIPOC user shares an example of racism.

2. People in the same group comment a little on it. Mostly the lack of surprise or that all white people do this in kind.

3. White people then dogpile on the thread to show they're disgusted by it, at best. Mostly, they give examples of how they're not like that. As if to prove that because they responded and say it's not okay, that shows they're not like that.

Words mean nothing. I know, social media. All we got for the most part are words, because pictures can't capture a concept most times like racism... except the consequences of not addressing it. But words aren't the biggest problem. Anyone can say they want to help. Anyone can proclaim they're not racist, even liars seeking to spread disarray here.

The thoughts are the problem. Words can hide thoughts. Words change. But thoughts drive actions. Always.

If someone calls your thoughts racist, don't blow up. Don't be defensive and reply to retaliate. And don't disconnect or hide. Do what very few people do when called out on it.
