anna (navi@social.vlhl.dev)'s status on Saturday, 14-Sep-2024 21:17:07 JST anna @tedmielczarek @fasterthanlime disagree, specially for distros
but even if you drop the static link point on my post, everything else is way more problematic, vendoring and lockfiles, building random c libs in build.rs -

anna (navi@social.vlhl.dev)'s status on Saturday, 14-Sep-2024 21:17:05 JST anna @tedmielczarek 1.80 releases, breaks the time crate, we at gentoo now have to hunt every rust package that uses directly (or indirectly via a library) and patch the lockfile to use the new version of time
if this was c, c++, or python, or similar, we'd bump the time crate package and maybe trigger a reverse-dep builld, that's it
but rust, (and go and nodejs stuff too, to be fair) require manual patching to bump a dependency, it's kinda really sad and a bit ridiculous imoIn conversation from social.vlhl.dev permalink -

> prevent receiving DMs from nonmutuals
wha? is that server side (an admin sets it) or client side (the user does, per user)?
DMs are the simplest thing, just, don't post to your /followers but only to the inbox of those mentioned...
if it's a client side filter that just hides DMs from people that you don't follow, okay i guess, but otherwise why complicate itIn conversation from social.vlhl.dev permalink -

anna (navi@social.vlhl.dev)'s status on Friday, 13-Sep-2024 19:58:43 JST anna i don't think i feel good about e2ee on fedi
considering fedi's tendency to not sync data properly, feels like it would just cause a lot "can't read that" issues
the usability is also quite limited, basically only for DMs, and fedi is already a place where one-on-one private chats barely happen
dunno yetIn conversation from social.vlhl.dev permalink -

> That means every window manager has to have its own Wayland server and compositor code, likely copy pasted for added updating pain.
most compositors write and/or use libraries which can just be updated like any other library
wlroots make tiny and simple wayland setups possible, look at tinywl and dwlIn conversation from gnusocial.jp permalink -

and it's not only the kernel, every project hosted on sourcehut, which is a modern hosting platform, makes use of mailing lists as contribution methods
i'll avoid complaining about how the github-style contribution sucks, but just say that it doesn't work for a project structured like the kernel where you don't have a single repo, but each subsystem is developed basically as a "fork" by many people and merged back piece-meal
trying to manage a single centralized repo with 1700+ developers on it would be *hell*In conversation from social.vlhl.dev permalink Attachments

but when working on a bigger MR where changes are requested all over, fixups are so neatIn conversation from social.vlhl.dev permalink -
