@skinnylatte my experience as someone who only ever visited offices in SF is that it is nice to have a rooftop patio at the office to hang out on when the sun is out. The Mozilla SF office had a rooftop patio with a *fantastic* view of the bay bridge.
@skinnylatte additionally: I visited New Orleans for the first time in 2024 and my biggest regret was that we didn't make time to try any Viet-Cajun fusion food.
@skinnylatte I would like to subscribe to your newsletter (as I typed out this joke response I realized that also this is an earnest response to your forthcoming venture).
@zkat@b0rk when things felt good at Mozilla there was some of this feeling, even if it wasn't reflected in the org structure. There were volunteer contributors in all parts of the process: developers, module owners, QA, localizers, community support, (I could go on and on). It felt empowering to run Nightly builds and file bug reports, like it was actually making things better.
@whitequark@zkat@joepie91 RE: licenses, I'm inclined to agree. Seeing how Apple releases the source to their operating systems as well as how Google manages open source projects over the years—both of which are effectively "here's the source code, go fuck yourself"—I came to the conclusion that the way in which a project is run matters a heck of a lot more than the license.
@whitequark I think you could get a lot of customer loyalty from providing a hosted service comprised of open source components. You could even have a guide for "here's how you could self-host" as an anti-lock-in guarantee. Showing the specifics of what you're paying for is also pretty compelling.
@skinnylatte do you spatchcock your chicken? I've had great success doing so. I usually also roast chicken in my 12" cast iron skillet so I can preheat it on the stove and sear the skin then flip it over and put it in the oven.
@skinnylatte have you ever had Ghanese shito? It's a pepper paste that I think includes both fish and shrimp. It's basically a flavor bomb. My wife ordered delivery a while back and we loved it but she can't remember where she got it from. 😭 There aren't any explicitly Ghanese restaurants around us, but there are a bunch of pan-African places.
Due to circumstances well within our control (me being ridiculous), things have escalated from there. (Rainbow approves, though, which is what really matters.)
My cat Rainbow likes to sit in this basket in my bathroom. My daughter painted a portrait of Rainbow in the basket. I hung it in the bathroom, naturally. Then I got a photo of Rainbow sitting in the basket underneath the painting.
