    @skinnylatte the western vegetarian/vegan obsession with replicating meats and cheeses is so annoying. Just let vegetables and tofu and whatnot be their delicious selves!

    @skinnylatte she has also described that phenomenon! The next time we are in SF we'll have to meet up so you two can chat. I feel like I'm constantly telling her about things you post, I think you two would really get along. That might have something to do with her also being a queer autistic Asian immigrant…

    @skinnylatte my wife tells me that the first time her immigrant family tried skim milk they thought it had gone bad. I think they bought it because that's what all the other families they new in America used. I think my mom still buys skim milk, and margarine instead of real butter. The margarine kills me because she loves baking dinner rolls and they're really good but margarine is so bad. 😭

    @skinnylatte we randomly stumbled into this unassuming place because we needed to use the bathroom, then looked at the menu and wound up getting their charcuterie board where virtually everything (down to the mustard) was made in-house: https://toupsmeatery.com/

    @skinnylatte we visited New Orleans in November and my biggest regret is that we did not find our way to a Vietnamese-Cajun establishment. 😭 (It was my first time there and there are entirely too many good places to eat.)

    @dalias @jpm @tithonium @foone I assume it uses a zeroconf address: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-configuration_networking
    Remember that the "Ethernet" device here isn't connected to your actual network, it's just a protocol over USB. You can do this with a Raspberry Pi Zero, too: https://learn.adafruit.com/turning-your-raspberry-pi-zero-into-a-usb-gadget/ethernet-gadget

      Zero-configuration networking
      Zero-configuration networking (zeroconf) is a set of technologies that automatically creates a usable computer network based on the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) when computers or network peripherals are interconnected. It does not require manual operator intervention or special configuration servers. Without zeroconf, a network administrator must set up network services, such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS), or configure each computer's network settings manually. Zeroconf is built on three core technologies: automatic assignment of numeric network addresses for networked devices, automatic distribution and resolution of computer hostnames, and automatic location of network services, such as printing devices. Background Computer networks use numeric network addresses to identify communications endpoints in a network of participating devices. This is similar to the telephone network which assigns a string of digits to identify each telephone. In modern networking protocols, information to be transmitted is divided into a series of network packets. Every packet contains...

      Turning your Raspberry Pi Zero into a USB Gadget
      This tutorial is a writeup of how you can follow along and turn your Pi zero into a Usb Serial device or Ethernet device. That's two whole ways of being able to connect to your Pi zero just by plugging in a micro B cable!

    @cstross getting malware into the iPhone would be the hardest part of this attack given that iPhones have a secure bootloader (and Apple controls the silicon).

    @jwz I'm here for this kind of pedantry. Also: after watching the anime _Akuma Kun_ on Netflix a few months ago I also fell down a rabbit hole of medieval demonology. Mine was centered on The Lesser Key of Solomon, though: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lesser_Key_of_Solomon#Ars_Goetia (the sigils are pretty sick!)

      The Lesser Key of Solomon
      The Lesser Key of Solomon, also known by its Latin title Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis or simply the Lemegeton, is an anonymously authored grimoire on sorcery, mysticism and magic. It was compiled in the mid-17th century, mostly from materials several centuries older. It is divided into five books: the Ars Goetia, Ars Theurgia-Goetia, Ars Paulina, Ars Almadel, and Ars Notoria. It is based on the Testament of Solomon and the ring mentioned within it that he used to seal demons. Ars Goetia Terminology The text is more properly called Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis, or, The little Key of Solomon. The title most commonly used, The Lesser Key of Solomon, does not in fact occur in the manuscripts. A. E. Waite, in his 1898 Book of Black Magic and of Pacts does use the terms "so-called Greater Key" and "Lesser Key" to distinguish...
