@rosey the core thing i disagree with is that somehow what gets installed from the google play store is more secure than what gets installed from outside of it. this place google as an authority for what are the good apps and what are the bad apps. this is very wrong

the root of trust should be configurable for any user, without any special permissions. for some it might be a techie friend, for others it might be some local service, for yet others it might be an online community. but a big tech corporation is fundamentally untrustworthy here and they should not get any authority. not one tiny bit

in addition to this, i feel this is google flexing their power and eventually they will go further. even what they are doing now is completely unacceptable. people shouldn't even need to enable a setting to enable installing from outside the play store

don't use the term "sideloading", it was coined by the industry to make installing arbitrary applications sound ominous and to justify their snakeoil security and taking away your control over devices you are supposed to own

    just call it installing

"fragmentation" is a good thing, actually. having many different projects makes the whole ecosystem more resilient and sustainable. it spreads power over many different projects

so never feel bad about writing your own implementation of something. go for it. it's good to have more implementations!

the whole notion that fragmentation is bad is dangerous

what we need are common standards between many implementations, and cooperation between implementations. everyone should feel empowered to write their own implementation

@puniko he has done multiple talks and blog posts about it, starting with that "the ecosystem is moving" post

he has been spreading this harmful rhetoric for over a decade
