@dalias Then don’t. I just made the experience - also among progressives, for many years - that neither groups nor society actually function without some degree of structure. Most people have spent their entire lives in institutions, and they won’t magically learn to function without them.

People keep talking about “solarpunk”, “walkaway” and similar ideas, but as a person who really needs an institutional context I don’t really see the hope, because those theories lack solutions for important collective problems, like building shared ideas and preventing violence and hostile takeover.

Don't say "the AI did". Don't say "the AI didn't understand". Say "the AI company's system did" and "the system did not succeed". It guards against personification and misattribution at the same time.

@cwebber 20 years ago, we advocated safe languages from the Lisp corner, and I'm happy that Rust finally broke through!

@evan Yes, but it makes sense to have community splits. It's one of the things that makes Fedi so cool. I wish we had a way to create these types of communities, without binding them to domain names and the sociotope of an instance. (like Discord "servers" or Matrix "spaces" - distributed social groups, across a federated system)

@Em0nM4stodon you might know: in German the feminine word for “hacker” is “Häckse”, which is often pronounced like “Hexe” (witch).

Banksy on a wall is a material surrealist.
They're not the same, but it's a dualism!

@nina_kali_nina I've been trying to figure out my own art story. I don't think there's a single reasonable answer. Maybe, everything that we make or shape is proto-art?

@cwebber @laurenshof @evan You are both working in a challenging space, and I respect that. Discussion is hard to avoid sometimes.
My dichotomy was just for illustration. About the rest, I mostly just agree, and hope that you and the community can figure out a good path forward. My vote tends towards “strong tech makes better social guarantees” or sth like that.

@laurenshof @cwebber @evan what I really like is the openness of it all.
On the signing issue, I'm with Christine. I like Evan's viewpoint for social systems, but not for digital systems with "complex system" mechanics and active intelligent threat actors.

@whitequark we have a "scared barker" around at a hackerspace. they do this because they're scared, and they will stop immediately if their owner greets the person they are barking at - so I told them, to ignore the dog for a second and greet people. they don't even have to be 100% disciplined - the dog just "gets" that "these are friends".

@whitequark dogs in general, will usually do whatever gives them friendly attention. in most cases it's better to try and ignore the dog while they're barking, because "attention is confirmation".

@whitequark dog puppies tend to learn "not biting" by trying to do so, in their early development. if you give the right signals, it usually just goes away - but same as with barking, some people use the wrong signals.
