    More enshitification. DropBox adds to the OpenAI data vacuum all your files unless you opt out. Having the pipe is one thing. Having it be opt out and not even telling users about it makes me furious. Their cover story that it is only being enabled for people in their alpha/beta testing program is BS too. I just double checked and I have "Early Access" turned off. I have no idea if I accidentally triggered a file dump to them with results from a file search because nothing in my UI was indicative of when/if they used AI. Fucking clowns.     BookWyrm people, what is the proper way to add this book to the library on my server? I don't want to do it manually since there is already an ISBN number and I want to import it from some server based on that. Unfortunately it only seems to allow searching by ISBN with a camera to read a barcode. Add to my virtual reading list for the time being anyway :) #BookWyrm

    @ramblingreaders I’m on the main instance which didn’t come up with anything. That may have changed since I did this search. Is there a mechanism for it to query other databases or is that a standard thing it does when searching ISBN?

    I did a lot of C++ programming back in the early 2000s. C++ has evolved a lot since then. Every time I go back to revisit it to see what is new it seems to be filled more and more with these sorts of easy to step on your own foot pedanticness. I think I'd rather jump to Rust than back to C++ if I had to pick a lower level language again and straight C wasn't an option. #programming #CPlusPlus devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewt…

    @JordiGH @goatsarah It's been since the 1990s that I took these classes but I think one of the big difference with DiffEq class was the introduction of partial differential equations instead of the ordinary differential equations we had worked with before. It's possible that the names of classes have changed and "differential equations" today equals "differential calculus" of my days. But even then, and I went to a college prep school, it was only the AP math group that learned calculus. The most everyone else got was "pre-calculus"

    @Suiseiseki Right, I was just bringing up Linux kernel as an example of a software project that supports very very old hardware compared to ditching devices in under five years. Some other commenters stated that Google has upped it to 7 years for newer Pixels. That is more reasonable. I'd still like to see all these big manufacturers support security updates for hardware going back 10 years.

    Google's support for older devices makes Apple's look like the Linux kernel (that is only recently dropping ISA and took until 2012 to drop the 386 processor). My four year old Pixel no longer receives security updates even though Android 13 still does. WTH? Meanwhile a iPhone 11 that I had at the same time can still get the latest iOS. What's more the security updates for previous iOS versions supports devices going back to 2015. Google doesn't even have the excuse about OEMs etc. This is their phone, bought to run on their cellular bundled service (Google Fi), purchased through them. It is 100% vertically integrated.     I never bothered to learn the origins of the Renaissance Faire/Festival phenomenon in the US. I had assumed it had analogs to some sort of festivals in Europe. Nope it's a 100% American creation. It always felt more Medieval than Renaissance era too, which it always was apparently. It was just the people sponsoring the first one in 1963 thought Medieval had negative connotation to so many people so they opted for the more enlightened era name Renaissance.     @sarahdal Never heard of this person and looks like can forget I ever learned of his existence. Reading up on him it's fascinating that he went from "I'm not transphobic just because I wrote a transphobic character in 2008" to being such a hard-core anti-trans person that he broke up his marriage over it and got banned from Twitter even during the Musk era.
