hankgWhenever I hear the “Harris is the DEI candidate”, and you will too, I’m going to use this quote from Dana Milbank: “Right. Vance, who has served 19 months in the Senate after writing a book and briefly dabbling as a venture capitalist, was picked by Trump on the merits. But Harris, who spent decades as a prosecutor, district attorney, attorney general and senator, became vice president because of diversity, equity and inclusion.”#uspoli#Election2024

hankgI've been thinking about our MSM's performance in recent years and how much it is failing everyone. In the early 2000s some people tried and failed to setup left of center media. A lot of that was because it was seen as a needed counter-balance to right wing media. It turned out the constituencies weren't that big, or devoted. That was a lot because the average center-left or left person didn't feel disenfranchised by them the way the right has since the mid-20th century. Now it feels different, especially as organization leaders at outfits like NYT, CNN, et cetera *explicitly* say they are trying to cater to more right wing voices. I think maybe there may be a large enough constituency fed up with the MSM from a left leaning perspective that could open up an opportunity for new organizations to create good journalism that doesn't let it self, or jump at the chance, of being led around by the nose by the right wing media ecosystem or their friendly billionaires (most of Silicon Valley, Private Equity leaders, etc.). . Flaming Hydra, 404 media, and others show some early promise. Here's to hoping we see it blossom into a society level force that displaces the worse than useless dinosaurs of today's MSM. #rant#uspoli#msm
@moira@lolgop At least in 2016 you could hypothetically say there were doubts about if he'd rise to the occasion and/or would become like a normal adult if he won. We know now that the worst case projections were either spot on or not pessimistic enough. There is no benefit of the doubt left after 2020.
The latest beta of the Relatica mobile and desktop Friendica client (v0.11.0) has just been released. This has some big updates including: better support for Bluesky and Threads content, the ability to limit yourself from sharing/commenting on/liking content from specific networks (like Threads, Diaspora, etc.), spellcheck on mobile platforms, showing network data for all posts/comments and federation delivery status for your posts/comments, and lots of other bugfixes and smaller features. It is in review in the Apple Testflight for iOS and macOS as well as in the Google Play beta system. Downloads for Android, Linux, and Windows are on the install page of the main project. See the CHANGELOG on the project page for more information about this release too. #relatica#friendica#fediverse
@thomasfuchs It was so futuristic that we took pictures with no film etc. But then when we needed to do something with the images the quality was such shit and it couldn't store many. Polaroids would have been better but then you had to scan it, etc. It's the usual caveat of being ahead of its time.
@osnews I fire this up on my physical Apple //c as well as in VMs to use it as a file manager environment of sorts. It's amazing how much they can squeeze out of that old hardware. It would have been cool if they had implemented an API layer so that apps could have used it for their UI layer like what GEOS did. #RetroComputing#Apple#Apple2#Apple2Forever
@darnell I have moments of reservation when I get on a Boeing plane at this point. I can't imagine trusting my life with them getting me into space. Then again I think people are way too optimistic about the reliability of all manned spacecraft systems we've ever built, yes including the SpaceX capsule. Invariably we get into a sense of complacency until someone dies or nearly dies.
@LeaBug "The reaction is a signal for us to pause, adapt and learn so that our future approach to these moments balances celebration, inclusivity and broad-based appeal," Christina Hennington, Target's chief growth officer, told analysts in August...so throw LGBT people under the bus as usual. I am never delusional enough to think that any mass marketing campaign is ever anymore than a money grab for a market. It's still disappointing they caved as they usually do.
