Being born in the mid-70s I grew up when society was way more homophobic than now. I am familiar with all the scaremongering about gays in locker rooms/bathrooms if we were accepted as normal members of society instead of pariahs back then. Even though they saber rattled about gays needing separate bathrooms/locker rooms they never actually did it. The speed with which Republicans have pushed these anti-trans bathroom bills and the equivocation of everyone, including Democratic law makers, is deeply disappointing and disturbing. Bishop Niemöller's poem has never been more poignant than it is now. Gay people throwing trans people under the bus should already see the warning signs that we are going to be the next people put through the wringer. We can't let these bigoted assholes steamroll us on this stuff. #lgbt #uspoli #rant -

I found a diorama builder game called Tiny Glade. This tool, especially with daily starting scenes, helps me Zen out a bit in a virtual world I build myself even with my lack of artistic ability. I think I'm going to do a daily 15-30 minute disconnect from the world therapy with it. #game #TinyGlade -

There has been a huge Twitter exodus in recent weeks that has accelerated since the election. A bunch is on Mastodon, a bit more seems to be Threads, but the overwhelming volume seems to be Bluesky. I love seeing the professional communities coming over. if a few huge celebrities make it I firmly believe the FOMO will bring everyone else. Then Twitter can be this decade's MySpace. My contempt for these Silicon Valley monopolies grows by the day and is almost at the level I have towards the Silicon Valley Tech Bros. We should have never allowed the tax code and monopoly statute enforcement to be changed so that we got to this point. It is the cause of so many of our problems and it is a runaway train at this point. Related to the end of my previous post. It's not that LLMs have no use. It's that everyone I know that likes them seems to forget about their error rates and how easily their hallucinations "sound right" but are so very wrong. It's even worse behavior than copy/pasting shit out of Stackoverflow or whatever the first search result out of AltaVista was in the early internet days. My first impulse when a MAGA/Trumpist type (who I've since blocked) scolded me about having no introspection about "my candidate" was to start asking about how much introspection they had in 2020 or to start up about the relative fitness of both candidates. That's just more of what I did 9 years now with exactly zero minds changed. That was one of the big reasons behind deciding to excise these people from my life. I'm spending hours and hours trying to do "the bridge" thing, bring concrete facts to have a basis of discussion around which we can talk about our opinions, working to see their point of view to some extent and try to have them see mine. In return for all that effort I get whataboutisms at best or taunting and an ever more extreme version of MAGA being embraced ever more tightly. There is no point in any of that. In general my default position has been that keeping the peace and staying measured is being the bigger man. It still is in most circumstances. But sometimes taking a stand for principles and pushing back is being the bigger man. Sometimes just walking away from people who have crossed the line and continue to do so gleefully is being the bigger man. "You are just hurting yourself by cutting friends/and family out." If I was doing this capriciously or over trifling things perhaps. This is not capricious, I've wrestled with this shit for years, and it is over very serious things which have gotten ever more grave over the last year. It was only once we crossed a threshold that is so far above what I can tolerate that I've chosen to do this. Cutting these people out and saying my piece rather than holding my peace is actually helping myself not hurting myself. #uspoli #rant -

Got a scare mailer from the Republican about the Democratic candidate for my state house race. Conflates BLM with "defund the police" (once again, great job on bonehead framing that you knew the media would screw us over with BTW) and "legislative advocacy" from BLM website of: "end qualified immunity" (sounds wonderful to me), "student loan cancellation" (again sounds wonderful to me, especially if we clamp down on all the diploma mill grifts), reparations (scary wording of something more bland when people get into the details). I'm sure it will have its intended effects for some "independent" voters. Meanwhile the Republican candidate is of course a theocrat grifter who recently was indicted on forgery charges. The longer I've been into working on my own health the more skeptical I've become of the whole "wellness industry". Why? Seeing how the compute lack of regulation lets snake oil run rampant, being burned by people that turned out to be quacks or grifters, watching people fall into quackery more and more, etc. It not only leads well intentioned people down bad paths but undermines faith in scientifically grounded lifestyle choices, medical interventions, et cetera. Yeah big pharma has lots of warts and even with regulation we have people like the Sacklers who get away with murder. It still pales in comparison to what is going on in the alternative health/wellness industry. It's not that there aren't good things in there it's that the singal to noise ratio sucks and the most viral content is more often than not at best misleading and many times dangerously wrong. #health #rant -
