@liztai The US and Europe are very different places, if you lump them together you will find contradictions.

@liztai I'd say your confusion is caused by treating Europe and the US as the single homogeneous entity "the west". Europe and the US have been divulging on this and other issues for quite a while now, it seems that divergence is about to become a rift.
Europe wants moderation and digital privacy controls, the US (and particularly their tech companies) don't and so brand it censorship. -

@liztai @emmaaum some of the grifting arseholes were in the government, one of them is currently licking Trump's arse and another one is on the run, sunning himself in Cyprus and is really annoyed that he's been outed by the grifters favourite newspaper.
One thing to be aware of is that the rioters are an infinitesimally small proportion of the population and are the type of obnoxiously odious tossers that the majority of us avoid like the plague. The rioting is them having a tantrum. -

@HauntedOwlbear sorry I could have posted a link ... but then you wouldn't have had the fun of tracking them down. They're brilliant. I saw them on the first night of the tour that the t-shirt is from. (just realised I forgot to alt text the pics... tusky edit to the rescue).

@liztai @rakyat the monarchy here in the UK is slowly dying out, literally and figuratively. Hopefully it will implode soon and we can start thinking about becoming a modern country instead of an episode of Downton.
There seems to be far more interest in this latest saga from outside the UK than there is here. We're too busy coping with the inequalities and deprivation caused by our right-wing Govt. -

@liztai I'm going to guess "people" is an overly generous description.

@BethanyBlack none of the respected economists predicted the 2008 crash and they've not altered their theories since.
Supply and demand is utter nonsense, the actual world doesn't work like that, anywhere, ever.
Infinite growth breaks the basic laws of physics.
Assuming people act as homogeneous groups goes against basic psychology.
All of that is baked into economics at a fundamental level from what I can see. -

@BethanyBlack I started reading up about economics about the same time for similar reasons. I learned that it's utterly unscientific, doesn't learn from it's mistakes and has core principles which break the laws of physics and go against basic psychology.
Now every time I hear someone is an economist I treat what they say with utter disdain. I wouldn't trust them to run a tombola stall at a village fete. -

@liztai I've seen them both. Barbie is witty, thoughtful. self deprecating, unexpected, interesting and fun. The woman next to me in Oppenheimer fell asleep. I'd go and see Barbie.

@thomasfuchs I don't see large generic instances being the route to wider uptake.
I think it will be new instances set up by existing orgs with existing user bases who want to sidestep the social media giants. That will need one or two to take the plunge, but if they make it work then others will follow.
So not lots of individual users joining and choosing an instance but influxes of large user bases on to ready made new instances. -

@thomasfuchs doesn't directing them to a big instance just lead to a number of large instances taking over the fediverse?
I don't think widespread uptake will come from people attempting to join in the current way, it'll come from new instances springing up 7 bringing a current user base with them.
I'm surprised large media orgs with userbases haven't set up their own instances. It allow them sidestep the social media giants & talk directly to their users / readers / fans etc. -

@thomasfuchs "choose an instance" is definitely a hurdle to wider uptake & that's a bad thing.
Do you have opinions on solutions? Better directory / lookup / search that hid the decision behind questions about interests in might work but feels a bit clunky.
Wider uptake might come if orgs set up their own instances & people joined the one for their work / sports team / newspaper / political party etc. So that interests led to an instance rather than finding an instance that matches interests.
