I am going to regret asking this I am sure, but what in the world is happening in #Britain?
I feel like labelling it far-right protests seem simplistic

@liztai Lynch mobs? Brownshirts? Certainly not "protests".
@liztai To answer your clarifying edit: anger that the nazi state they were promised didn't come to be, and that the team they were duped into tying their entire identities to is one whose time is finished.
There's no actual harm they're suffering that they're trying to stop, except maybe to their pride.
@emmaaum hi sorry, do u mean the grifting arseholes is the govt or...? Sorry I wasn't sure who you meant 😅
@liztai Grifting arseholes fomenting pointless hate to get themselves attention and money.
The end of 13 years of disaster capitalists in Con governments asset stripping the country and fomenting hate to get attention and money for themselves because they don't know how to govern decently.
Horrible press (outside owners) fomenting hate.
This isn't "economic unrest". The cause is calculated manipulation.
@liztai @emmaaum some of the grifting arseholes were in the government, one of them is currently licking Trump's arse and another one is on the run, sunning himself in Cyprus and is really annoyed that he's been outed by the grifters favourite newspaper.
One thing to be aware of is that the rioters are an infinitesimally small proportion of the population and are the type of obnoxiously odious tossers that the majority of us avoid like the plague. The rioting is them having a tantrum.
@ibboard @dalias am so sorry you guys are going through this 😐. I hope you are safe
@dalias @liztai Yeah, it's "I was a football hooligan and now I've been validated by Tory party/Reform UK/Daily Mail rhetoric and false promises of sunlit uplands after Brexit, and so I'm going to get violent and trash things because we haven't been taken back to a nostalgic pure white Britain that never actually existed".
What seems to have turned these occasional "protests" into more violent riots is apparently lies about the identity of a teenager who killed some kids and injured more.
@dalias @liztai I don't think the "protests" by the far-right have ever *not* been violent. But it was previously "I'm a drunken yob who thinks he can punch a few police officers because it's my right as an Englishman" and scuffles broke out. Now it's full-on broken windows and torching stuff.
I guess the election didn't help either. Now we have the Labour party in power for the first time in 14 years and they're not seeing their racist dreams in government manifestos and they don't like it.
@emmaaum I see, I see. The poor and working class are frustrated and a populist is basically taking advantage and elites are disconnected from the grassroots - kinda situation?
@liztai Three primary layers of shite:
* corrupt press
* disaster capitalist governments (not Starmer's)
* a handful of grifters
Tommy Robinson is the one of the grifters. He called for the riots. His brand speciality is anti-Muslim hate. He's been playing that game for 20 years.
All of these layers feed into each other.
@liztai @dalias I don't think it's as wide spread as the press makes it seem. And I've not seen huge crowds. It's just that the small gangs of thugs have all come out at the same time in multiple places.
I probably wouldn't want to be back in Bolton town centre right now (where I grew up). Although, as a white guy, I'd probably be safe as long as I didn't tell the bigots to fuck off with their regressive racist views!
@emmaaum from your comment? 😅
@liztai Where are you getting that from?
@marinheiro what you said seems to be the impression I am getting, but I could be wrong I guess 😅. I find that the British govt seem disconnected from the grassroots too
@liztai Areas of long-lasting poverty, de-industrialisation and loss of social cohesion, with years of being fed racist rhetoric by traditional media, and easily exploited by actual far right organizers blaming collapse of NHS, housing shortages etc on immigrants. Having said that, social groups involved look similar to those following NF/BNP in 1980s. It is absolutely not universal
@liztai Not sure what you mean exactly - there has been some rioting by the far right this week. Some of it was pretty scary and violent. There is a broader level of anger abroad and looking for an outlet after 14 years of continuous austerity, the far-right are trying to harness that.
@moh_kohn this has been my impression so far. I'm thrown off by the media calling it "far right protests". I think that's too simplistic. I'd say what you said - the far right groups trying to reap this anger.
We have a similar movement in Malaysia.
If the govt doesn't do anything to make the lives of the poor/working class better it'll continue to happen as they are taken advantage of by these parties. (Speaking from my Malaysian experience.Tho we're not at riot stage yet.)
@ibboard @dalias yeah I'm always suspicious of the media and prefer to ask people on the ground how it really looks like. I'm glad you're safe! I hope you avoid the danger zones.
@marinheiro I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but they need to use the change management strategies China used to alleviate poverty - get someone from the community to be a liason between the govt and the community. The liason will know how life is really like help the govt align aid and policies to really benefit the ground.
One can dream I suppose.
@liztai To be fair to them, they haven't been in power very long. But Starmer's instincts seem very hard-line 'law and order' generally, and it may be their response is pure repression, in which case this is going to bubble up again and again. Especially if they continue the 'illegal migrants' rhetoric.
