In the ancient days when I was a young geek, I saw this first hand. There's a species of techbro who still thinks of themselves as tech nerds, and will find a single techie to be their "ordinary guy" buddy.

The thing is, most of us found that deeply disturbing, so they ended up "friends" with either someone profoundly broken, or very intimidated.

And the petty vindictiveness whenever the "friend" decided to end the "friendship"...

@errant @mekkaokereke - For the record, I believe extremely strongly in the "marketplace of ideas". But the first rule is respecting reality, and the current version of it is called "science".
Not applicable to everything, and certainly not without limitations and its own problems. But that's the ideal, at least.

@errant @mekkaokereke - And the important part of that is learning to ask: "How would I know if I were wrong?" instead of "How can I prove I'm right?"

First order of business is a standard of behavior, and how we enforce it.
That was the original point of markets; special enforcement applied as well as special tolerance, and everything was done openly with witnesses.

@WarnerCrocker @StillIRise1963 Nah. It's always been a compromise. Having the blatant racism shamed into silence was nice, to the degree that it happened, but that's a very small step at best.

@jeffowski - This is actually a much deeper truth. When you realize that the answer to "how does it work" is "magic" most of the time, you realize why so many people believe in magic.
