     The thing is, they could totally continue to self-host or use one of the many foss aternatives.

     2024, storing all the FOSS source code on Microsoft servers... nothing surprise me anymore.

     @nixCraft CVS and Subversion servers that we hosted locally. Used to take HOME back up tapes before we eventually contracted a service to pick them up and bring them back.

     @nixCraft I pushed to my own git server. Companies usually self-hosted SVN or CVS before that.

     Free forges existed for many years before GitHub. Like, sourceforge is from 1999.

     @nixCraft originally my hard drive.

     Then some source control system that I never understood and that as far as I could tell ran on a PC that was under my boss’ desk. A nightmare this was!

     Then I convinced the boss to let me install and configure git (including some post receive hooks that would automatically deploy to production) and ssh on one of our dedicated servers (we were an IIS house at the time, so neither came pre-installed).

     I was so proud of myself at the time, but I think GitHub came about a few months later, so my system didn’t live for very long…

     SVN was a game changer at the time. Then Git blew that out of the water.

     @nixCraft my late father was a software engineer. After going through his things, we found boxes and boxes of many floppy discs containing the source code for the software he developed

     @nixCraft SVN, CVS self hosted, and before that, Changeman for mainframe (cobol) running on Altamira(AS400) hosts. Funnily enough, back then continuous deployment DID exist, and the tool is called "Control-M". One could upstage/downstage code from one environment to another

     @nixCraft First it was tapes, then disks, then hard disks, then RCS repos on hard disks, CVS repos on hard disks, and now Git repos on hard disks.

     I use online services as backups, but the primary storage is always local.
