I’m so impressed by the work you’re doing on PixelFed! What kinds of changes do you need to make to support Lemmy and groups? @dansup @atomicpoet @dansup@pixelfed.social @NGIZero

Men in pinstripes suits are already working out how they can take over the Fediverse. I have no doubt. And they’ll be creative and sneaky about it, too. At the same time, search WILL happen somehow, because it’s good for the end users. So, I think the best defense is to manage HOW search happens, and to make *user-centric* standards for how external services can integrate with Fediverse apps

Ben Pate 🤘🏻 (benpate@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 26-Feb-2023 13:34:57 JST Ben Pate 🤘🏻 @jupiter_rowland Yes. This will happen. There’s nothing stopping Google from indexing the Fediverse. And that’s a good thing. If it brings more people here, and if those people are still free to Federate however they want, then it’s something to celebrate.

However, #WebSub and #RSSCloud both make real-time publishing of RSS feeds possible. And they’re so much easier to implement. The main drawback I’ve seen is that RSS can’t carry the same amount or fidelity of information, which is why ActivityPub is still the better protocol.

Ben Pate 🤘🏻 (benpate@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 26-Feb-2023 13:34:44 JST Ben Pate 🤘🏻 @fediversenews @Stark9837 @steve One of my troubles with ActivityPub is that it’s TOO flexible, meaning that every different app can pick and choose how they want to implement it and you have to make mappings for every possible flavor of ActivityPub. There are no flavors of RSS/Atom/JSONFeed. The fields and types are well defined, so everyone implements them the same way.

Ben Pate 🤘🏻 (benpate@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 26-Feb-2023 13:34:43 JST Ben Pate 🤘🏻 @fediversenews @Stark9837 @steve I have implemented both, and you can do MOST of ActivityPub in RSS+WebSub for sooooo much less pain. But, ActivityPub can carry MUCH more, and richer information than any RSS format, so it’s the one to build on for now.

Ben Pate 🤘🏻 (benpate@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 26-Feb-2023 13:34:04 JST Ben Pate 🤘🏻 @fediversenews @steve @Stark9837 Agreed. #IndieWeb is a good example of a federation that doesn’t use #ActivityPub. You could make a case for #RSS, as well. ActivityPub is my absolute LEAST favorite protocol to work with, but it’s the current darling of the “extended” Fediverse. Some day we may have a better protocol to build upon. But to me too, “The Fediverse” is much bigger than ActivityPub.
